Buying new (second hand) car from garage - Motor Tax

I've agreed to buy a new car from the local garage. I'm calling up tomorrow to close out the deal. Long story shot the car car currently has no motor tax.

If I drive home for Christmas with no motor tax am I goosed if I get stopped or is there anything else I can do to?

I've already got the insurance changed over / the new insurance disk and the car has an in date NCT cert.

I'll be asking the garage to post away the change of ownership details straight away and once that's changed I'll request the PIN online and pay the motor tax online ASAP. However given the time of year it is the offices are likely to be closed most of Christmas I suspect I may not get this done this side of Christmas.

Just get a receipt from the garage with the date of sale and their stamp on it, keep it with you in case you are stopped at a checkpoint. When you do pay it online print off the receipt again and keep it with you until you get the disc. Avoid parking in a public place though as you could still get a ticket for non displaying of a valid motor tax disc.
