Reading this thread on bargain alerts got me wondering do we have any vegetable growers on the forum. Aldi this year have come out and said they will not sell below cost price to consumers. I dont belive that for a second.

Its already a tight margin business so last thing growers need is a phone call telling them that they are getting a reduced payment. Are the supermarkets pushing growers again like they did last year?

Aldi lidl tesco and musgraves said they wouldn't.

What about fruit then? What exactly is the path from farm to shop?

Currently, I have heard farmers either get a fixed rate or get a variable rate for fruit and veg.

If this is true that you get one or the other, sounds like the farmers that go for a variable rate get shafted at christmas due to low prices, but get rewarded when the prices are high. Simple business

tesco have lemons/limes/pineapples and onions for 19 cent
they then have sprouts/white potatoes/iceberg lettuce/carrots for 69cent. Is the 19 cent onions not going against what they said?

Even if one supplier is selling hugely below cost and taking the hit themselves on the loss, it destroys the market for everyone, people will buy their veg in that supermarket and leave a vacuum in other shops, who in turn will be either put under pressure to drop their prices or take the hit on sales which then impacts their suppliers.

At the end of the day it's all business, us farmers know that the supermarkets don't give a sh&t and will pull the plug whenever they like, if it doesn't make sense to grow veg farmers will just stop, leaving no choice but to import all our fresh vegetables. That's a choice the consumer can make, if they don't care where the veg comes from fire ahead and buy as cheap as possible, if they want local produced they will have to pay a premium.
