I would like to learn about mapping cars.
I would like to get the map off my car and view that.
can anyone shine a light into how I can get a map off my car and into a viewable format ?

    about me, I have a bluetooth/ wifi obd2 dongle.
my car is an r53 mini.
i am quite good with pc/mac/linux and I can find my way around new software quick enough (I work with computers as a software dev).

I don't mind buying a usb obd2 connector as that would be more fault tolerant but since I have no plans to write to the ecu maybe this isn't a big deal.

can you recommend a walk through and or piece of software ?
I am happy to use any os.

An MPPS is good for a beginner to read and write maps, then you can use WinOLS to find the maps within the files(not easy for a beginner) and tuner pro to edit them. WinOLS will edit them too but tuner pro is a personal preference.
Not many people will walk you through as it takes years to get very good at it and even some very respected people dont actually know as much as they should about the files ;)

But that said this guy will give you a very basic look into finding files in WinOLS on the edc15: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXpuH1y6t8Y6q9kP6ope8VA

And whats the point of trying to learn remapping if you don't try your files on your car???

The real skill in mapping is understanding how an engine works and how the parameters in the map affect its performance. The software/hardware side of it is trivial by comparison.

At the basic level, you've got a 3-dimensional map for fuel. x-axis is rpm, y-axis is accelerator position, z-axis is fuel quantity. If the car is turbocharged there will be a similar map for boost pressure. After that it's trims and adjustments for various conditions depending on what sensors report back e.g. lambda, MAF, etc.

@rex-x: I may well try a map on a car at some stage, but I like my car and want to get comfortable with software first and don't want to here from the "don't do it" parade. i like my mini a bit to much too explode it in an act of techincal hubris.

@chimaera: I am certain you are right but we all start somewhere :) and now im off to google and download the softwares
