Clutch Release Bearing Audi A4

    Hi All,

Had my '09 2.0TDI A4 in for a service today, I had asked him to check out the clutch on the car as it had been making a god awful noise in the last few weeks when the clutch is depressed. He has said without stripping it though that the release bearing is definitely on the way out.

My question is it possible to just replace the release bearing and a ballpark cost? Or if you are doing that should you go the whole hog and replace the clutch and dmf as well? Again anyone have a ballpark cost?

    Many thanks,
    John

    Difficult question,

How many Km's on it and how does the clutch feel and flywheel sound ?

Is there any rattle out of it in neutral with clutch out ?

You could just do the bearing but id do the lot if I was paying all that labour anyway unless you have tiny miles done

Get it all changed. It's not worth just replacing the bearing.

Aren't they all sold together as a kit anyway?

Release bearing can be bought separately 80 , and unlike older cars the clutch and flywheel could be running 600 euro plus, so in this case it might be worth doing just the bearing , subject to inspection of the other parts after dismantling

I've a similar problem with a 2.0 TDI Mondeo. crazy noise and vibration on clutch, which has now actually died down. Wanted mechanic to look at bearing, but given the amount of labour involved he is reluctant to do it without doing a replacement of clutch & DMF. I did have the clutch & DMF replaced aleady, probably done less than 40,000Km since.

I'm now just considering driving it until it gives up since resale value is less than a grand and seems crazy to fork out that money again on it.

    Any suggestions?

On mine theres the bones of 80K miles from new. I bought it about 18 months ago with 45K odd miles, was mainly city driving with the previous owner so a lot of clutch use. I'd be mainly open road driving so wouldnt be a heavy clutch user.
No noise or rattle out of the car in neutral its literally only when the clutch is engaged.

somewhere between now and about 150k miles, you will need a new flywheel.
I would change the lot now if you intend keeping the car in the long term. If you were thinking of selling in the next year or so, well it would be worth just doing the bearing.

If you just do the bearing now I guarantee you will be kicking yourself as one by one the other components will brake.
Get a whole kit for it,I would maybe suggest shopping in the UK for a kit as the prices can vary hugely
I recently got a exeedy kit (turns out it's a valeo boxed and stamped) all the better.it was mk2 rev5 mr2 delivered for 90e compaired to the 130e here for what ever cheap crap the motor factors had in stock.I know it was only a 40e diff but it could vary greatly on flywheel and clutch.
Plusvthe fact it's only a extra 6/8 easy to get bolts to change flywheel 30min tops

Definitely not a release bearing don't waste your time, it is the bearing in your flywheel that is making the noise.
I have replaced dozens and I too thought the first one was a release bearing.
Very common on this model, new flywheels have different bearings fitted now and don't fail.
Be warned the the flywheel and clutch kit does not come with the release bearing, you have to buy that desperately, the release bearing comes mounted on the flange it slides on.
Also check the gearbox input shaft where the flywheel bearing runs on and make sure it is not scored or damaged.
