Does anyone know who Ireland's most travelled man or woman is? I know one guy that has been to 44 countries around the globe, but can anyone do better than that?

I'm really curious because there are no reports around the web of any Irish person that has covered the world

Do you know anyone that has travelled around the globe?

As far as hard core , sweat of your brow travel is concerned, Dervla Murphy must take the honours.

Ask some of the guys over on the maritime forum. I'm sure some of them must have been around the world many, many times.

I don't think air conditioned jetting from airport to airport and on to hotel is in the same league as peddling a laden bicycle to China, peddling down through central Africa, or walking through the Andes with a donkey, accompanied by your young child.

Cue discussion of meaning of "most travelled".

I'm off for popcorn. Back soon.

    Aaaaaaand action . . .

I've been to about 35 and wouldn't consider myself that well travelled. I'd say there's bound to be some Irish millionaire who's spent a large chunk of time globe trotting and would be hitting 100+.

I've been to 44, too. Bit tricky, though. Do you count England, Scotland and Wales separately? In which case it's 46 or 47.

No, otherwise you'd be entitled to count individual German, Australian or US states separately.

But thanks for reminding me to add the UK to my list of countries visited, now at 25.

I'd say my father would be well up there. He spent 40 odd years working on ships... He has been all over Europe, a lot of South America, most African countries and has a fair chunk of Asia and Middle East under his belt too. I think Russia is about the only place he hasnt been too.

Benny the Irish polyglot must be up there. He's been all over the place. Spends a good bit of time in each place too.

Nothing it is just a bit of a ****hole. I struggled when West Africans spoke English to me....lets just say communication was a difficulty. It is a horrible dirty port and so much noisier than Ghana from where I had just crossed

At the same time, Milan is the city I have the least love for in Europe so go figure

My least favorite city is Frankfurt ... full of people that love the smell of their own farts :P

For myself 60+, the exact number depending on what one defines as a country.

I'm sure there's plenty on well over 100.
