Mediaserver - Galaxy S5 battery issue

    Hi everyone,

Someone might be able to help me.

Up unti a few days ago, I had been praising the battery of the S5 to anyone who would listen.

Now though, just out of the blue, the battery has become terrible - and having checked the settings, this thing called 'Mediaserver' seems to be responsible.

Anyone have any advice on this?

I haven't downloaded any apps recently, nor am I am aware of any Updates that may have caused this.

I had that on an S3 a couple of years back. Can't remember exactly, but I think it's something to do with the phone going into a loop, looking for media files. One solution that worked for me was to create a "no media" file in every folder, that way when it went looking it saw there was no media and it gave up. As far as I remember, that worked. That and the odd reboot. Final solution for me was rooting it and sticking cyanogenmod on there. I didn't just that to get rid of that issue though, it was general annoyance at touchwiz that I wanted rid of.

    Cheers for that.

Must give some of your recommendations a go - it's really headwrecking. As I look at my phone now, it's at 2% battery, whereas this time last week it could have been at 64/65%!!!

This is usually caused by corrupted files on card, it usually settles down once indexing Is complete, if not I would recommend to take backup of SD card and reformat using the phone function itself and re transfer the data again.

I don't have an SD card in the phone.

Still, it could be a corrupt file on the internal memory. Doing a full back up is a good idea.

    Cheers folks, will do it.

    Thanks for the advice everyone.

Very annoying for this to just happen out of the blue!

I remember this issue with the S3 too.
The .nomedia fix didn;t work but the other theory about the corrupt file seemed to work for me.
IIRC it was a photo that had been deleted from the DCIM folder that kept showing up as a 'black picture' in my album?

    Hi everyone,

Just to give an update on this.

After scouring the internet looking for a quick and simple solution to the issue, I seem (hope!) to have found it.

I simply went to my Applications, went to all, and scrolled to Download Manager, and Media Storage, and cleared the cache on both.

Having had a sneaky look at my battery stats this morning, there is no sign of that pesky 'Media Server' so far.

Hopefully it will stay that way!

    Thanks everyone for your input.

I tried that on my Galaxy S5. No luck here unfortunately. I even rebooted, but still showing mediaserver in the Battery. I'll keep an eye on it and see it disappears.

    It's an awful pain.

Mine is an S5 too...So just to give even more information on what worked for me, I first cleared the cache on Download Manager - and that, alone, didn't seem to work.

But having reread the web page that was giving me the instructions, it said that I had to clear the cache ALSO on Media Storage.

The, having turned the phone off and put it charging overnight, then phone was back performing as it should which (which is brilliantly...love the battery on this thing!)

This problem has been wrecking my head all day. Have tried clearing the cache to no avail and cant seem to see any corrupt files. Any ideas in other things to check?

I just had this problem, and have found a solution.
I tried clearing app caches and even wiped the cache from recovery, nothing worked. It's nothing to do with a particular app either but i have noticed my stock music app keeps appearing in 'active applications' (where the RAM is not the shortcut button). It's still there now so i can rule is out but it's unusual nevertheless.

Anyways so the mediasever essentially gets caught in a loop scanning empty folders, I ran CCleaner, opted to remove empty folders, app caches and to close the current process.
    This fixed it!
It will still appear in your battery as a huge percentage but once it's charged fully and used it'll even out and fall back to 14% or something like that.

    hope this helps.
