    08/09 Audi A4 2.0 Diesel
    08/09 BMW 3 series 2.0 Diesel
    10/11-ish VW Passat 1.6 Diesel

These 3 cars are roughly the same price. Which one do you think is better/nicer/easiest to sell in 3/4 years time?

that bm engine has the timing chain issue, simply type in n47 into the search box for more information... what is your budget?

Strange that a weedy 1.6 Passat would be thrown into this mix when there is a 2.0 available.

just my 2c worth, I'd go for the 2yr younger Passat, although maybe with a larger engine if you can find one.

From those 3 an A4, you'd get a decent 2 litre superb in that range but they don't look great is the downside.

I would obviously consider a 2.0 litre Passat, just they seem to be very rare. nd probably more expensive. Would they be a 6 speed?

What about a Passat CC if you don't need a middle rear seat?

You made up your mind yet? I have always found VW trade in well, but I think they are a bit over-rated.

No I have yet to decide and yet to drive any! It'll probably be feb before I buy.

WHat's the depreciation like on BMW's and Audi's do you know?

I'm drawn to the passat because it's newer, the Audi because that's what I wanted originally and the Beamer because it is the nicest looking of the 3.

They are generally no more expensive than a similar year A4 that you have on your list.

Plus they have the added bonus of not being so ubiquitous on the roads.

Nearly every 2nd car you pass in Ireland now is an Audi.

The Passat CC is a classy (and better looking imho) alternative.

So it would cost 13/14k for a 2009 Passat CC?

I think the Beamer looks nicer.

I've owned both a 3 Series and Passat CC. A relative of mine bought a 2010 Passat CC 170BHP DSG privately earlier this year for just under €15k.

The 3 Series is a nicer car to drive but the CC is a nicer place to be in. The 3 Series is smaller both inside and outside, rear legroom is very tight in them and the boot is small too. 3 Series diesels of that vintage also suffer from timing chain failure so either buy one that has already had it replaced or get a good warranty with it. CR TDi engine in the A4/Passat CC is also more refined and lively than the 3 Series diesel engine. Drive both before deciding though.

Again, which car we like is very subjective.

But there's no way I'd say this car

    is nicer than this one

    But each to their own.
