Loss of power/ spluttering / anti pollution fault

    Hi Guys,

I bought a 2006 Peugeot 407 1.6HDI last week, had to get the seals done on the injectors and some pipes replaced above the injectors as they were leaking.

The car was driving fine all week and today on my way to work it started spluttering, I looked at the dash and the engine light was on so was the oil light. STOP lit up then on the dash so I pulled over. I was only a couple of miles from the nearest town. I started the car and it cut out, started again and it cut out, I then let it run down the hill I was on and started it again and revved the ****e out of it, I managed to get it to nurse it the couple of miles to the next town and pulled in at the first garage.

Called the tow truck and when he arrived I tried to start it again, car started then died, then the battery died and I couldn't start it without a booster pack. Now battery looks fairly dusty so I'ld say it hasn't been changed in a while, but I hadn't left the lights on in the car or done anything which would have ran the battery down.

The tow truck brought the car back to my local mechanic, I noticed an 'anti pollution fault' on the centre console as I moved the car away from the tow truck. The mechanic had a brief look at it this evening but the battery was dead again. He started it with a booster pack and said it was spluttering again and wanted to know if there was any chance there was petrol in it but I don't think there is.

Anyone have any ideas similar experiences?

My first port of call would be revise over what work was done with the injectors. The pipe over the injectors? Do you mean the common rail line or the small pipes which go from the common rail to the injectors?
Check and see if there are any leaks or a diesel smell.
The engine you have I've read hasn't got a good reputation. If the engine light was on then there will be fault code logged, get a diagnostics done.

I got the car through my brother who works in a Garage I paid book price for the car, the reason I bought it in the forst place was because I wrote off my previous car 3 weeks ago.

There was a smell of diesel in the car before the pipes and seals were changed. There was still a smell of diesel off the car after driving it when it was hot but I thought that was from the the deiesel which had previously leaked on the engine.

When I popped the bonnet on the at the garage car the engine was a bit smokey, there was also a fair bit of smoke coming off the exhaust, it wasn't thick black smoke just white kind of smokey.

Hmm, head gasket seems to spring to mind. Did the engine get very hot?
How was the white smoke coming from the exhaust? I mean was it thin like condensation or was it quite thick looking? If thick then I'd be looking at the head.
Check the oil and coolant levels.
I wonder though, does that engine have a DPF?

The smoke was thin but there was a lot of it.

Spoke with the mechanic there today, the Diagnostics pointed to the EGR valve which was stuck open.

    Hopefully that will fix it.
