    Hi all,

Went to the dentist this morning, I need two crowns on my front teeth due to previous root canal treatments.

I also need two "posts"...total cost 2400. This is for glass ceramic crowns.

I looked online at my dental, they are having a half price sale atm but I'm afraid that cheaper price = cheaper quality...can anyone advise?

2400 for two crowns. Thats about 300 per post and 900 per crown. You will get 500 euro back on tax.

As with everything in life costs and quality will vary. For your front teeth you want nice crowns made with care and skill. More expensive crown will generally have a higher percentage of the fee spent on laboratory work, and more time taken to prepare and temporise the crowns.

As a dentist I can have a crown made for 40 euro or for 400 euro. The more expensive one will look better and generally be of higher quality. Does paying a lot ensure the dentist places the best in your mouth....no. But paying low cost guarantees your not getting the best.

Ask to see pictures of cases similar to your situation done by the dentist you choose, pay particular attention to the gum line. Some patients care only for cost, while others are interested on whether the investment is worth it.

I do want nice crowns...He said the cheaper crown will look dull over time so the more expensive will be the way to go esp because it's front teeth.

    It's such a big decision :(

You are right that is a lot of money. But I agree with Fitzgeme.
Why not try and get a cost off a prosthodontist(A Dentist with a specialist degree in restorative dentistry i.e crowns etc).
In my opinion the two best looking and most aesthetic crowns widely available now are what are called e-max and empress.
The older porcelain fused to metal crowns are less life like. However the result will depend on the skill of the technician and Dentist. Maybe the Dentist has some cases he has already done that he could shoe you i.e pictures etc.
It is a big decision and you are right to question cost. You certainly will be able to get them cheaper , but cheaper as Fitzgeme said does not always mean you get the same result.

With the front teeth you definitely want to get the aesthetics right .

I thought they don't really use porcelain fused metal crowns now or at least not as much .

I have seen metal ceramic crown look great, and I have seen ceramic crown look awful. Its like a portrait, the paint used is one small factor but the artistry and precision of the technician and dentist are really the key factors. Having said that I do favour Empress crowns for front teeth, but factors like the bite and night grinding will be the deciding factors.
