More than likely I'll be on the turbo for the next couple of weeks.

Is there ant resources or websites out there to build up a plan/schedule?

Have you had a look at Trainer Road?

Never heard of it but I think that's exactly what I am looking for. I assume I need an ant sensor for the pm link to my Mac?

What are you plans for next year godtabh? Are you looking at racing or simply keeping fit to do some sportives and the like. Time on the turbo for the former can be very different dependent on exactly what you are looking to do. My own focus will be on track and perhaps shorter TTs with road racing being used to build up my overall strength. You can get a lot out of well structured turbo sessions.

However if you are simply looking for endurance to help on sportives you can probably get away with a lot less structure within your sessions, particularly if you get to supplement it with longer road spins whenever you get the chance

I havent set my goals for next year but its likely to be at least one 200km, 250km and 300km spin so endurance will be key.

I'd also like to improve on my climbing. Going to pick a handful of local climbs and try and improve my times up them.

I've never used a turbo but from what I have read unless its specific or focused in some way people will just give up on it. Would rather that not happen

Replicating that sort of stuff on a turbo is not going to be practicable (unless you have a Tacx-type VR), so I think you are better off trying to get a routine that keeps you interested for the session without overdoing it (and trying to avoid getting disillusioned). Although you can include some efforts you can reserve the "real" ones for when you are out on the road

Maybe I should consider doing a race or two!

Back in winter 09/10 I was dragged out by some guys from the local cycling club and started doing a few hill repeats. Then crashed on ice breaking a wrist. Was on the VR for the next 6 weeks and took the opportunity to sign up to the club and IVCA. Started my racing career 2 weeks after getting medical clearance to get back on the road bike.

The previous year I prepared for my first Irish sportive with 3 weeks on the VR following a knee cartilage operation - did the WW200 after those 3 weeks with only a couple of commutes of road preparation!

Was doing turbo sessions until the night before the cartilage op which I am certain aided recovery. Was back on the VR the day after the operation which again aided recovery - fortunately I had no reaction whatsoever and the physios could not believe how well I was doing a week later. Took a week before I could venture onto the VR with the broken wrist in plaster - had some very bad road rash on my upper leg as well but that healed quickly once I started the exercise

Obviously everone is different and I would certainly not encourage anyone to attempt this sort of stuff without getting medical clearance first

I think if it can be any way fun, you'll use it more. I use the VR 3-5 nights a week over the winter, and find it great. The main routine I use is racing against virtual opponents, where those opponents are my own best times on the same circuit. I find this a fantastic motivator, and would pushing very hard to gain a few seconds on a previous best. I also find having cadence and power on the heads up display excellent for gauging my effective work rate, and my average cadence is much higher as a result.

No plans to race, but intend to get plenty of long days on the bike in the coming year,

Smacl is the VR thing you're talking about free by any chance? I like the idea of racing myself.

I've had to only turbo for the last 3 months and my only advice is you definitely, 100% need a plan for every session. I built mine up over the time and have an aim for each session. I mix it up between short, tabata style intervals, 30 sec rev outs, some building from 30 sec to 2 min intervals and back again, then some longer 3- 10 min pursuit style efforts. It averages out an hour or an hour and a half a session. I don't do any climby things though, I'm mainly focusing on leg speed/pursuity things. This has meant that when I meet a hill / slight incline since being back on the bike i go backwards. :o

The only thing I found is that I'm getting bored of my turbo music. I have a few old reliables for intervals that are really starting to grate on me now. It's hard enough find the time to turbo never mind time to make hour and a half playlists for each one g or i could just be being lazy!)!

'fraid not. I use TTS3 on a TacX flow, new one with TTS4 is currently €289 on bike discount which is a good price, although it is pretty much their lowest end offering.

Same, I've had the same playlists running for yonks now, and have promised myself time to make some new ones over the Christmas. Lots of Dead Kennedys, NIN, Rotterdam Terror Core and 70s and 80s punk planned :)
