Hi, I was trying to make faradays motor (I failed) using salt water instead of mercury.
    http://youtu.be/YCRg83d8rQ8
I used a 9V battery and I noticed bubbles coming from where the copper wire was in the salty water, the magnet has no effect.
I wanted to know if the copper is oxidising/rusting
And why when I swap the + and- the green and bubbles appear to change direction, this can be seen in the short video.
Please anyone explain what's going on?
    Thanks
The water was all green and yellow in the end BTW

Electrolysis of NaCl perhaps. Forming CuCl and H2. Nascent Chlorine is very corrosive to copper.
