DeCare Dental - Whats the catch??

OK back from the dentist and paid €40 for a checkup and €35 for an xray. Total €75.

I saw a poster for DeCare Dental and looked at their website. Basically, as far as I can see, for €144 per year you get the following 100% covered:
    • 2 dental exams per year
    • all x-rays
    • 2 cleanings per year
    https://www.decaredental.ie/dental-plans/

Am I missing something, it seems a no-brainer. Anyone have any experiance of this crowd or another insurance comany??

You're missing the fact that €35 for an x-Ray is a bit extortionate - my dentist in Newry charges a fiver.

Hygienist charged me €70 for cleaning last week when I was in. Husband got his done too. Found it very hard to hand owner 140 just before Christmas!
What are people paying around the country? My friend in Westmeath pays 40 for her cleaning

No I think it is the standard price. Just looking at a dentist in Newry they are charging £40 for a similar X-ray (OPG).

I work for a dentist that deals with De care Dental and it's all legit and above board. It's just another form of health insurance but for your teeth. VHI offer or are planning on offering this cover too. But it does not cover cosmetic or unnecessary treatments as far as i know.

    Yip - you're right - I was talking about single tooth x-rays

I would like to know how this work from an economic point of view, I have had a read through the T&C and it seems that two exams, X-rays and cleaning per year are covered.
I looked at the local dentists to me and that would come to about 160 euro a year. The policy for me would be 144 euro per year. So basically the insurance might as well send me a cheque for 16 euro. How does this business model work, is it the assumption you wont attend that much? the Ben Dunne gym model? thoughts?

well it covers UP TO 2 exams, x-rays and cleanings per year. presumably if you dont use them you still pay. I doubt i would have 2 exams a year. usually about 8-9 months apart.

Add in the fact that a lot if people take out decare as they are aware of a big dental bill coming their way in the future....!!
    I can't understand it myself....

I am one of those people facing big dental bills over the coming years,so that basic plan would be no good to me as it doesn't even give cover for fillings. To cover 70% of the cost of procedures like fillings and root canal,I'd have to take out at least a level 3 plan which is upwards of about €250 per year, and I'd still have to pay €100 excess [for a big procedure] and 30% of the procedure costs.

So,I'm not sure what to do. Do people still go off to Budapest etc to have dental work done? Back around five years ago, loads of people were doing that and the ones I spoke to were very satisfied.

If you are facing big dental bills then 250 euro a year is peanuts , you'd recoup it in one root canal .
I spent more than 250 a month in the last few years on Dental bills.

A root canal on a molar tooth will set you back 800 euro with most endodontists in this country so De Care will cover 560 of that for you which is a huge amount.

You can increase the annual cover to 2000 euro if you so wish for very little extra on your sub.

Its nice to get the treatments done here locally so as you can recuperate in your own surroundings and not rush treatments.

Plus a lot of dentists are not keen to take you on again after you have gone abroad for treatment. Local dentist wouldn't even look at my mam after she had root canal done in N.Irl! (And you can't donate blood again either if that's something that you do)

Ah that's mental money. Don't get me wrong, the hygienist I go to is brilliant. Tried another one but wasn't nearly as good. It's just that it's a lot of money for 15/20 mins work and I try to go twice a year. Could be cutting it back to once and improve my flossing routine!

We have DeCare included in our insurance package now at work, starting this month. If only I knew we were getting it before I got those 3 fillings, cleaning and checkup a few months ago..! Still though, looks great. Will report back whenever I use them.

I'm the same tbh, I had it for three years, and at the time required a lot of dental treatment and it really helped having it.

My dentist now has his own scheme which covers two checkups a year for slightly less than decare

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 martiga

    Yes of course it is

I'm trying to gave advice on how I've found them, is there anything wrong with that!

I've always found them excellent, and claims payout no problem, so what's the issue with that

Some people on this site just don't like hearing good things, say something nice and your being classed as an employee. Seriously quote="Stheno;93719294"]I'm the same tbh, I had it for three years, and at the time required a lot of dental treatment and it really helped having it.

I think this poster is jumping to a conclusion that because all 13 of martiga's posts since 2012 on boards are positive recommendations about various heath/dental insurance companies over the last years, that they might somehow be involved or not impartial in the insurance business.

I am sure this is of course nonsense, and anyone caught shilling when I do IP checks will be called out in a public and embarrassing way that would reflect badly on the company such a dishonest person might work for.

Acequion no back seat moderation please.

Robbery is when someone forces you to give them money.

The 'catch' seems to have been on their side - that they underestimated the costs. 2 X 6 month checkups for my children were more expensive than my premium for them! Their rates have jumped hugely now for renewal.
