Apparently you can prime the new filter by submerging it in a bucket of diesel. Messy but effective.

    Is it the 1.8?
If yes, there is a bleed nipple on the filter and you can also undo the return pipe from the fuel pump and suck it through that.
My Ford dealer uses an electric pump, I use one of those oil extractor pumps.
You will need some kind of pump to bleed it.
If you don't have one, fill the filter with diesel and then be prepared to noodle it for half an hour. Don't worry, it will come back to life.

Just re read. Do not tow. Not a great idea. Also you'd have to tow it half a mile. Not great for the car

Well, I have the 1.8, so I'm not sure how similar they are. Principle should be the same.

Your best bet would be the pump option. If you have anything that could be used to suck fuel through the filter and pump, you should be OK.
My starter survived an unbelievable amount of noodling, because I once had an airleak in my fuel system and that took weeks to find.
Again, I do not know exactly how it is like on the 1.6.
Sucking fuel into the fuel filter should be half the battle. I usually have to noodle it for 20 minutes.

Spray easy start in to air in take after the air filter. Engine will try to run on the spray getting the engine to turn over faster and in turn get the diesel pump working quicker.

Have to plus one on this method

Only other way is sucking the air out if the pipes to get the diesel up and fill the fuel filter which is very difficult even with garage equipment.

Easy start will get it no problems

There an absolute pain to start after changing fuel filter as there is no fuel lift pump so once there's air in the system it's very hard to get them going. Ford have a special tool to draw the fuel up. For diyers I say towing it is probably the only thing to do but maybe someone else has a suggestion.

Some light positive air pressure applied to the filler pipe might push the fuel down the pipe. Go easy, I don't want you exploding the tank and blaming me!

    just needs priming up.

either suck some fuel up through the fuel filter or remove the filter and fill it with fuel - then refit and try again.
