Thanks! HM - I am fond of this shot as it reminds me of happy (and not so happy!) times backpacking by myself in Vietnam earlier this year.

No Tripod though, so 1/15th of a second handheld = blur :(

It's in Lough Boora in County Offaly. its a very popular spot for nighttime photography as its a bit away from light pollution, but its really amazing any time of the day and year.

The skytrain seen here is always popular, there have been quite a few HMs over the years in POTW here from different photographers of the same subject.

There are tons of more sculptures in the park - i'm going to concentrate some of the other ones the next time i am out freezing my @ss off.

No, you can see it, just not that clearly, there is a good amount of lightroom magic to get it to jump out like that. the town of kilcormac is to the south west of that spot, that's the light yellow glow you can see directly below the milky way. That glow is much stronger in person, taking over that corner of the sky. They are switching over from sodium street lights to LED entirely soon, the main street has already been done, that may make a difference to light pollution.

Over the summer i was out the back end of the dingle peninsula, you could see the milky way with the naked eye much clearer there, it was incredible, i got some shots and then some critique in a thread about it at the time here.

    in a positive way ?

Yes, it probably should be positive for light pollution. LEDs are directional, with less light loss to the surrounding - less need for cowling or covering. However, there is some concern that as they are more efficient they will be stronger and there may be more reflection from wet surfaces, concrete and snow.

At the moment only main streets are changing over, not enough to make an impact. In time whole towns will be LED - that's when we'll be able to see a real difference.

i understand that astronomers in the US are jealous of european astronomers - as sodium lighting is not used in the states.
sodium is monochromatic, so it's easier to block the wavelength from your pictures.

Now we're talking. I personally was not so keen on recent winners but MysticalRain's photo above made me go wow! Simply wow! Beautiful shot of the most amazing light. The slight fog adds to its almost over flowing atmosphere. It warms me, I want to be there, at that time. Sensitively and subtly processed also which is a rare skill these days.
