worst luck with cars

I'm having the worst luck with cars this year, I'm actually getting annoyed this year alone

bought a trajet, four days later head gasket went, off to the scrap yard for you

bought a alahambra, too big cost wayyy too much on petrol, sold it

bought daewoo lacetti from a garage, driving it home heard a weird noise, stopped off in my mams, engine gone. off it went to scrap yard

that was four weeks ago, now I'm on my fifth viewing in the morning. I've viewed cars with fake nct, oil leaking, people changing their mind when I get there, broken windows, no log books,

why why is it so bloody hard to buy a car ;(

Bring a mechanic next time you view a car, cant trust no one these days. Bunch of crooks they all are. They would scam their mother.

Simple as, if you buy private you never know what your going to get, go through a dealer that way you have a guarantee.

90% of dealers are crooks also.

90% of dealers are crooks also.

But a guarantee is legally binding

Stop buying privately, or off "jimmy down the road who sells cars".

Go to a proper garage, with a good reputation and that offers you a guarantee.

**** like you're experiencing is run of the mill for private buys.

    Avoid certain makes of cars.

I would never buy a Lacetti or a Trajet in the 1st place, they just look like rubbish cars.

I'm guessing the Alahambra was ok bar the lack of mpg? And SEATs have a decent reputation, so the secret is, "stick to decent makes".

stop buying **** cars from **** brands...

How old have all these cars been?

A failed head gasket shouldn't be the death of a car.

I can't understand the opinion that most seem to have "never buy privately". I've bought all but one of my cars privately and never had an issue like the above. The key is having a GOOD mechanic.

OP by any chance were these cars for sale for a lot cheaper than similar examples?

You sound a bit clueless about cars, (no offence intended) so maybe bring someone with you who knows what they are doing.

The Trajet sounds fixable, or at least worth more than scrap.

Basic research would tell you a petrol MPV costs a lot to run, so no the Alhambra's fault.

The Lacetti was under a dealers warranty, you get it fixed for free or your money back.

Theres an excellent sticky on buying cars in the Motors thread, have a good read of that.

To be honest it sounds like you've no interest in cars whatsoever and you're buying the cheapest ones you can find. I'd suggest doing a bit of research before spending any more money, look at cars from reliable manufacturers (Honda, Toyota, etc) instead of the cheapest junkers on DoneDeal and hiring a reputable mechanic to inspect any car prior to purchase.

A car is a big investment for most people - you rely on it to get you to work in the mornings, bring kids to school, do the shopping, protect you in the event of an accident... Spend a bit more money on a good car and get something that won't let you down and eat all of your cash.

Any bother with that 05 Trajet GG?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,946 ✭✭✭Bigus

How much was spent on these cars , my guess is they were in the hundreds price range rather than thousands ?
If a car is 35000 new and you buy one for 750 what can you expect in reality ?

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

If you keep buying junkers, then its not them, its you. Youre buying too cheap/bad brands/from people who can see you know nothing.

And your mechanic sounds pretty poor as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭Johngoose

I would agree with the others, it's the brands you are buying, I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. Toyota are very reliable, possibly a bit boring I know. I buy cars more for reliability than anything else. Also you need to spend a bit to get something decent. A Toyota for 3,000 would do the business, just make sure it has a full years n.c.t.,etc. Also I would agree that most people selling privately are "dealers" of some sort. The worst thing is to buy in a panic, take your time.

Never buy Italian or French is what my father told me.

I think the mistake you are making is looking at the very cheapest version of any particular model on sale.
You should weigh up each car ad and see if it appears genuine. Use all the free online tools that allow you to check for genuine nct, recent change of ownership, tax status.
If possible within your price range, buy with long test and from the registered owner at the address as recorded on the logbook.
You are pretty much guaranteed to avoid the side of the road dealer by doing that.

    Yep, I agree.
The most trouble I've had with cars and bikes was with the few I bought off Main Dealers.

    I always buy privately now.
