How popular are you, or maybe how witty are you, or how much do you chase thanks?

Quote your most thanked ever post here, and state how many thanks it got. You can find your most thanked post by hovering mouse over your username in top right go to find all my post and in advanced search select search by most thanked.

I'll get the ball rolling. My most thanked post came from the world cup punditry gold thread where I got into an extremely stupid debate at a ridiculous hour with someone who insisted that us calling the Netherland's football team "Holland" was inoffensive, when RTE had been calling the team that since the 80's. Looking back on the thing it makes me laugh how into the debate I got.

Yeah ok, just because I don't have a problem calling the the Dutch football team Holland as opposed to the Netherland's I'm all of a sudden an imbecile. People use Holland and the Netherlands interchangeably every day, I guess were all dumb idiots.

Here is a direct quote from a Dutch person, another imbecile one would presume.
"Being from the Netherlands, I find differentiating between these two terms (Holland and The Netherlands) to be tantamount to nitpicking. I would not hold any grudge against someone who ‘wrongfully’ refers to the Netherlands as Holland. While it may be true that Holland only refers to South and North Holland in a strictly geographical sense, it can be used to refer to Holland as a whole, too, because there are hardly any discernible cultural differences between the various provinces. Therefore, as far as I’m concerned Holland is an informal moniker for colloquial use whereas The Netherlands is more formal. No need to discern." source http://www.internationalstudents.nl/...e-netherlands/

This whole debate is an exercise in pedanticness on your part. I understand and fully recognise the absolute fact that the countries official name is "The Netherland's," I never disputed that. The point I was and am making is that I do not see the need for hysteria over the issue. If the Dutch fans themselves, many of whom I would presume are not from the Holland region chant "Hup Holland Hup," then I think Eamon Dunphy can get away with referring to the Dutch team as Holland, as he, Billo and John Giles have always done on the show. The Oxford dictionary gives the word "Holland" definition as being another name for the Netherlands.

Furthermore, if the state funded tourist board are marketing their country as Holland.com, if the Dutch really had a problem with the rest of the world calling the country Holland then they obviously don't care enough to market there country for potential tourist in the manner you deem to be acceptable.

Another analogy would be us calling the USA, America, something which is very very common in my experience. Just like Holland is only a part of the Netherlands, the United States are only a part of America. That did not stop the RTE boys referring to them as America numerous times.

I have made my position clear on this. People do not call the country Holland with the intention of being offensive to its people.

As to your comment questioning my own intelligence, I don't really want to dignify that with a response, but I will. I am a currently a primary teacher undergraduate in Mary I, not that that is any measure of brightness. Such a low brow dig about me "buying into" how the Dutch market their country reflects far worse on you then me my friend.

    Good night.

    38 Thanks

I think it's up to you TBH. Whatever you identify more with is what you are

That was the first reply to someone from Northern Ireland making a topic here after they read a topic and believing a lot of people didn't care for people from NI. The topic made was asking if they were Irish since they considered themselves Irish but were born in NI.

I do actually be one of them idiots that try to get in a funny reply. I do it since if the reply is funny to me, I'll post it. I don't do it for thanks. I do it because I think it's funny and hopefully someone else will get a laugh out of it.

With that being said, the most thanked post I had, I never intended it to be thanked. I just posted my honest thoughts.

Actually, with the exception of one post, all of my "most thanked" posts were serious replies.

I got a whopping 76 thanks for a post, thats 24 thanks away from a bronze star and a free boards mug.

Ive printed it out and put it on my wall above my leaving cert results.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=89019970

Id consider myself easily among the top 5 most popular people on boards, my posts are always technically correct and well presented, hilarious when intended and almost always well received by the important people and moderators.
Where people have got more thanks than me its because their account predates mine and/or the involvement of conspiracy and/or multiple accounts.

I don't think any of the three headings OP listed [popularity, wit, thanks] have much to do with each other. Correlation does not imply causality.

Regardless, this is my most thanked post, though I've noticed I receive more thanks the older I get despite my exponentially decreasing posting rate.

Well your post was funny but I ended up reading and thanking the last post in that thread, which somehow nobody had thanks until now, four years later.

    So, uh, thanks...

Of course. Nothing better than sitting around a table in the pub with your mates and telling them you got a post with over 100 likes and seeing them become morbidly jealous

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,814 ✭✭✭harry Bailey esq

I often hear talk of bans and infractions, I'm on boards 3 years and my record is blemish free, that would suggest I'm an inoffensive chap.I wouldnt be very popular though,i have several regular trolls but I'm too long in the tooth to be taking any heed to that crack.
Thanks wise,I don't get many but I don't thank many posts either, and its usually the same dozen or so posters I find myself agreeing with and thanking. A few that spring to mind would be backwards man, pure bogger wisdom and wit, quite often comic gold.Wibbs seems like a very rational, level headed chap, as does anncoats, but I suspect he may be a shamrock rovers man.
I did however receive over 130 thanks for a post i made earlier this week, not that i give a flyin feck anyways but occasions like that are a rarity, the long rambling nature of my posts probably do me no favours in that regard.

Buona Fortuna, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
    1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
    2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
Is it a special place or maybe I'm just really unpopular:)

I haven't checked this in a while, and don't really know what it's for anyway, so I'm a bit shocked to find that a recent post in "Cool Vids & Pics" is top of the list. #2 is my advice on "how to find a good man" - you lot must be desperate - and then another funny picture. There's a pattern there, methinks. I even managed to get some thanks for starting a thread in AH about Statistics.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.
