witnesses living far from Dublin

When a witness living far from Dublin is called to a trial (sub poenaed)
and they have to attend for many days, do they get expenses?

The thought came into my head in a case involving a woman from west cork giving evidence.

It seems a huge if not insurmountable problem if a witness had to support their own travel and subsistence. If a young adult on 100 pw dole had to travel from Donegal or west Cork to Dublin, it'd be hard to manage.

The individual can request that expenses be covered, saying that the expense would be too great otherwise.

I did this when summonsed to a case in Mayo and had to travel from Dublin. The Sergeant paid for travel, accommodation with bed and breakfast for me and two of my friends. We had our own hotel rooms and meal vouchers.

A few weeks previous, i was summonsed and did not attend due to the expense. My friends travelled on that occasion at their own expense. I had informed the Gardai that I would be unable to attend for financial reasons and heard nothing until the second summons was issued for the second court date.
