I have SKY box that is out of contract. updated to the latest EPG.
It is 4-5 years old, SD

For some reason, it loses bbc1,2, itv1, c4, ch 5 and saying no signal is being received, however the other channels such bbc3, itv 2 and all the e4, more4 channels are working fine with nice locked signal.
when i go to the epg, again the sky music is playing fine whilst i browse the epg. the epg is also up to date with latest programmed, but just no picture. it happens occasionally, one night its working, the next its not..

    any suggestions?

can you go to settings menu and see the signal strength, that fault can be leaves or a loose lnb arm ie rusted.

The problem channels would seem to be those with horizontally polarised signals, the 'nice locked' ones vertically polarised.

Switching the LNB for reception of horizontal signals requires that the receiver supply a higher voltage (nominally 18V) than for vertical (nom. 13V), so it's possible it's falling short here for some reason, maybe a receiver power supply problem, or a problem with the cable.

Can you post the make & model of your particular Sky box?

I'd try changing the f type connector(s) outside, where the cable connects to the dish.
Snip them off and screw on some shiny new ones.

Its an amstrad 550.060 box with EPG 3.8.8

Google doesn't turn up much on that box, so it wouldn't seem to be notorious for any reason, although power supplies can fail in any receiver. If you happen to have another receiver, you could swap them & see if there's any difference.

And of course the cable & connectors should be checked, particularly any connections outside, as already mentioned above.

If cable ok try changing the LNB which can sometimes go faulty with either vert or horz band.
