UNESCO world heritage site gets gigantic graffiti.

I've never thought Greenpeace were exactly wonderful but they're dead to me now. Staggering arrogance.

    Collection of photos.

Edit: It would appear that the letters are drawn with cloth held down by stones, which isn't as bad. Apparently you're supposed to wear special shoes to even go near those lines to avoid disrupting the surface, they did no such thing and have traipsed footprints all over the area.

Thread title is a bit OTT, no? Greenpeace lay down yellow cloth letters as part of a publicity stunt and are being accused of leaving footprints behind. Not supporting their actions, it seems a bit misguided to say the least, but they didn't go in there and spraypaint the place with 40 foot long letters like the thread suggests.

Bit of a misleading thread title. Stupid thing to do - yes. Destroy a Nazca line not at all.

I would imagine that the wind there would take care of whatever footprints are left behind pretty sharpish...

There's very little rain or wind there. That's why the lines have survived for so long

Nope, that's why the lines have survived as long as they have. The area's climate is super stable and the surface is incredibly delicate. That's why they're so strict about it. They left a big visible line leading from the road to where they put up their sign.

The problem is they went bumbling around the site in the dark and walked all over the lines. The only way the lines can be seen are from the air, you can see feck all at ground level, therefore very few people actually visit the site.

There's practically no wind or rain at Nazca, that's why the lines have survived so long. Their foot steps will take a very, very long time to disappear.

This might not seem significant to most people, but trust me it really is.

Yeah, I get that - perhaps I shouldn't have used the word 'sharpish'. But surveyors and archaeologists have been traipsing over the nazca lines for nearly a century now, doing probably far more damage. But I agree wholeheartedly, they are idiots for going there in the first place, considering that it's site protected from any form of trespass.

Archaeologists wear shoes like this and don't walk all over the lines in the dark.

Now you're just confusing me; if they're in helicopters why would they need the shoes?

They're hiding something, that's for sure.
