Solid fuel stove

I have just moved house and I now have a stove. I noticed tonight inside the stove is a piece of loose metal which is held in place at the back of the stove it is like a flame guard as it sort of stops flame reaching the top of the stove can some one tell me is this normal. I was able to move it and could have taken it out…
