Golf MKVI EGR valve failure; options?

So, my sister has had a 2010 VW Golf MKVI 1.6tdi for the past 18 months. It's been used mainly in stop-start, city driving during the weekdays, and then gets a spin down to either Galway or Wexford from Dublin every other weekend.

Alas, during the week the glow plug symbol on the dash started flashing, and it went into limp mode. When we dropped it down to the mechanic he said the EGR valve has failed, which having briefly scoured over various forums I found is a relatively common issue. It's pretty pricey to get right AFAIK, with not much change from €700 odd, so just want to explore options. Any thoughts/answers to the following appreciated!

-Has anyone had experience with this issue?
-Any way around it with remapping/removal etc?
-Is this mainly caused because of the nature of how it's been driven?
-Was thinking of replacing the car with its petrol counterpart (1.2/1.4), or maybe an A3 of similar vintage. Are these good choices, or any other options we could look at?

Have you asked VW for goodwill against the EGR failure as it's a common problem on those engines. VW were offering goodwill on them but it might depend on how good the service history is on the car and how friendly you are with your local VW dealer.

My bro in law got his done last week on his mk6 2ltr 140 at €550.

His turbo went a few weeks before that too at €830

Had thought of this, would we just take this up with the local VW dealer? We bought from a non-VW main dealer in May 2013 with a one year warranty. Car was brought in from UK also, would this effect it? Mileage is still low at ~40000.

Slightly better than what I'm being quoted atm, do you know if that was with an Indy or dealer?

EGR cooler went on my 1.6tdi 2011 golf, 25 months old and only 18k km, VW covered the full cost

Your biggest challenge around goodwill from VW is getting a VW dealer to convince them on your behalf. No harm in going to a VW dealer anyway and enquiring about lodging a goodwill claim with VW as at the end of the day it's work for the VW dealer that they can claim back from VW. If they say no then your no worse off than now and go the indy route like George Dalton (member here and based in Portlaoise).

My son in law has a 2010 Golf 1.6 TDI...105 BHP, from new. The EGR Cooler failed just outside the 3 year warranty period but VW paid the majority of the €870 replacement bill....he paid around €250 of the total. As both this and EGR failure are a pretty common fault, VW may meet some of your cost.

Never updated this, she ended up getting it done by the non-VW garage we bought it from with some goodwill from them (50/50 split of €570). Indy garage quoted us €800.
