Am trying to update an old macbook from version 10.6.8 but when I go to app store it says I need 2gb RAM. Am not sure if I have this when I go to about this mac it says i only have 1gb? Don;t want to buy the update if it won't work, is it possible to buy more memory for an old macbook?

Yep, if you hit the Apple menu in the top left you should see 'About this Mac' and it'll tell you serial numbers there, which you can google to find out the model number. After that it's just a matter of buying the right RAM.

Once you know what model you have, you can use the "Advisor tool" here:
http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en to help you see the maximum amount of RAM you can install.

Buy the ram from crucial. The tool on their website will show you the kits available for your specific model and are guaranteed to work. Buy the 4GB kit if your macbook can take 4GB.

    OP:

You don't say what model/year your MacBook is from or what you're trying to upgrade to (Mavericks? or Yosemite?). But if you only have 1GB and it shipped that way, I suspect you have a 2008 or older MacBook, and you may want to re-think your upgrade needs.

While the min requirements for both Mavericks and Yosemite are stated at 2GB, I'd suggest the realistic minimum is 4GB for Mavericks and 6GB for Yosemite, and personally I wouldn't recommend upgrading if you don't have that available, as it will be painfully slow. Having an SSD instead of traditional hard drive can reduce requirements slightly, but it's still shoot for the above minimums, esp. with an older spec machine.

Note, that depending on the model, you may not be able to upgrade to sufficient memory, so check it the limits for your machine. Note, some machines will support more than Apple officially claim. You can see a summary here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook
