although you might pay a bit more with FBD, they DO provide a good service. They have no problem with their lads calling out to survey the place and make recommendations. More importantly, if you are leaving them, make sure the cover you get is at least as good as what they provide.

FBD as far as I know, provide EMPLOYER liability cover for all family members working on the place, automatically. Others do not!!

That's sounds exactly like what my fbd man said before i changed insurance company's. That was 14years ago,and still think it was best choice i made.. My experience is fbd are the dearest and have the worst service

I switched from FBD this year and went with campion insurance I got higher levels of cover and cheaper. FBD and there associates IFA have being riding farmers for too long €75 discount is a joke when you are paying €460 more for insurance.

No. Family members must be named. Fractured skull last year. Week in hospital. Off work 6 weeks. Very deaf in one ear for 6 weeks. Hearing still not 100% in that ear. Headaches for weeks. I wasn't covered on fathers farm insurance with fbd.

Check are you covered for all members that need it. It's too late once you need it.

hijacking here abit, but is employers liability and to some extent public liability really needed by us farmers? Most if not all reputable trades we bring about the farm should have their own insurance???? Don't they? So what benefit is it to us to have employers liability unless for casual help of course. On the public side I know it covers you for cattle breaking out on to the public road and causing harm. But then again, as for members of the public coming on to your property why should you provide cover for that when they probably would be trespassing unless they were invited. thanks for any replys.

Public liability would be the only one I would be worried about everyone has cattle who will break out sometimes even if only once every 10 years
If someone hits an animal at speed and gets badly injured you could loose the farm.
Employers liability is only needed if you have someone working for a weekly wage IMO.
Insurance companies are getting worse at payouts too
Heard of someone lately that crashed car on ice
And insurance refused to pay out because one Tyre was barely under the legal tread limit even though she had comprehensive insurance with years.

If you don't have employees public liability should cover everything else and any decent contractor should have their own insurance other than that its a waste of money.

I've not got EL yet (funds tight last renual), but hope to this time.
If I have a cow calving & I ask you for help & the cow was to turn & hurt you, that's where EL kicks in. You are not being paid by money, but by a favour.

I pushed FBD on this two years ago when trying to push the costs down, I was considering dropping the EL and just keeping PL on the farm..

Public Liability does not cover any family member working on the farm who may be injured on the farm. It won't cover a neighbor if you have them in helping out with jobs as they are there in a working capacity, payment doesn't come into it.

PL covers people who are on the farm for reasons other than farm work.
EL covers people who are in doing work on the farm, paid or not.

Someone mentioned that FBD provide EL for free, that's not the case, it can be removed from the policy for a reduction in the premium.

Lastly, ours is up by €230 this year with FBD..
If I wanted to switch to Campion as mentioned above, does that involve a farm inspection, working away from the farm would make this a total pain and I cant be taking annual leave for this stuff..

Very hard to believe any thing of what you hear, a neighbour telling me FBD wouldn't pay out on an accident with his quad and a car because he didn't specify that the quad would be on the road...utter bs I thought.
Was talking to the other party in the accident months later, that told me it was the owners son that was on it........underage!!!!
OH is always looking for cheaper car/jeep insurance and has failed so far, happy enough here with FBD , never had a problem with a claim any way

I think all you need is the insured valued fbd assigned to the buildings/machinery etc when they did thier inspection and give that to new insurersm if you think values are too high/low adjust them as you see fit-make sure to black out sensitive details like policy number and premium you were paying

I switched ours this year to Zurich. You don't need a farm inspection (well we didn't) what I did was read through my policy schedule that was sent out with my renewal checked that the value of the farmhouse was right, then compared like for like and rang up a couple of brokers like campions and sheridans. Er and public liability was something I didnt want to drop because you never know who you have in the yard. But I found just asking why I had something on the policy or what it was worth was useful. Took a bit of time but it needed to be done and saved a good bit of money. Fbd were asking crazy money and our house was way over insured! So saved a bit that way and you will know exactly what you are insured for and why.

Does anyone have experience of Farm First - think this is through Zurich?
