Taking Irish Van (car Van) to UK

    Hi there.
I am half thinking of taking my car/van to the UK as I am moving over there. It is a Ford Focus Van.

Few things though, it is out of tax with about 3 months, DOE is expired with about 4/5 months, the insurance is good until about January/February.

I am just wondering if anyone knows what process I would have to go through about taking it to the UK and registering it/taxing/road legit it there.

Would I have to pay the back tax or do anything here in Ireland in order to get it over? (Assuming I make it to Rosslare without meeting the Gaurds).

Will the ferry leave me on regardless of the out of date Tax/Doe.

    Thanks

If the UK Police spot you with an illegal vehicle in the UK , they will have it impounded and you'll have to jump through hoops to get it back. To re-reg it, you'll need first to MoT it and then there's a small admin fee to pay.

The ferry company won't care, but I don't know how easy it will be to register a car van Focus there...I'd check that out before you go.

Driving in UK without have discs up to date is a risk. They won't just wave you on with a "be grand" attitude.
Get DOE done, pay tax and check with your insurer you are ok to drive in UK until you've re-regged car.

They have pretty good info on their site on what you need to do to import it there
    https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/overview

You can drive in UK for up to 6 months as a "tourist" (again, all discs must be up to date) but then you need re-reg it.

    Thanks for advice.

I won't be doing the DOE or taxing it as I am taking it out of the country for good in 3/4 weeks time.

Assuming I am not pulled over by Gardai in Ireland or Police in UK on the way and I get it parked up successfully at destination in UK, then I should have no difficulties registering it and getting it road legitimate over there?

But will there be an issue registering it over there since there's no such thing as a focus van over there you'd want to check that. They only have a fiesta van over there no focus.

That's what I was alluding to. I imagine you'd have to take it to a VOSA centre and get Type Approval, those guys don't mess around and the van would have to be spot on, and as said, the UK police will not let you proceed if you can't show the van is legal.

False economy and a big risk easily and inexpensively avoided.
