Changing Shifters.

I'm changing my 9spd Tiagra shifters to 10spd Tiagra so I only need to change the right shifter as I'm not changing the FD.

I've watched loads of YouTube videos (most are useless) and read endless threads which don't go into any great detail however I think I have a good idea of what to do but has anyone any tips on things that commonly go wrong or are tricky to do.

I'm only changing the inner cables for the brakes and gears as the outers are in perfect condition with less than 3000kms on them but if it's advisable to change outers too then I will.

Lastly, like I said I am only intending changing the RH shifter but I do have the matching 4600 LH shifter and a 10spd FD is only €20, should I do it right and replace the FD and shifter too or is there really no point?

I dont know but my guess is you need to consider that a 10 speed chain will be a different size than a 9 speed and how that works with cassette and chainrings etc. I'm sure someone else more knowledgeable will respond

Sorry should have been clearer. I'm changing the cassette and chain to 10spd too. The chainset already is 10spd so I really just wanted to know about changing the shifter(s)

    It's very straightforward
Just physically swap the shift lever and run the cables..
Setup the rear derailler as normal and away you go ..

I wouldn't bother changing the front mech or shifter

No difference in the operation or the cage with

Keep your €20 for the next chain

There's no need to change the front mech.

Unless the existing shifters are pristine, you'll likely end up changing the left also just so they'll match. Do you have to strip bar tape to change them?

I would say the 9sp front mech will be fine and you can replace it with a 10sp when it's worn out.

Yeah I'll take off the bar tape but re-wrapping them is easy so that's the least of my worries.

Your right about the shifters though, the 4600 shifters are both perfect whereas the name plate on the 4500's are scratched from when I stupidly turned the bike upside down to change s puncture last year and forgot to put my gloves under the hoods so yeah might change both while I'm at it.
