Hi all, just a quick query.
I am a self-employed individual and from next year I will file my own returns. They are the same each year and it's becoming harder to justify paying for a very straightforward Returns process.
How can I have my current (soon to be Ex) Accountant removed as my Agent on ROS ?
As I won't be dealing with him in the future I would prefer if he did not have access to my ROS file.
If I just send off an email to my area's Registration Centre will they take care of it ? I can then register with ROS myself early next year.
    Thanks.

set yourself up on ROS now

Then ask your accountant to remove himself as agent or ask the tax office directly

    However thread carefully.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
Is that an advisory to Tread carefully with regard to the ex-accountant....or with the Revenue ?

neither, just your better off having an accountant, you never know when you might need them. Why not do the accounts and ask the accountant to just file the form11. I do this for 2 or 3 clients

    Hi

Its only common courtesy that you give the previous accountant a quick call, thank him for his work and tell them that you will be doing your own returns from here on in. That's a perfectly reasonabe reason to not need anyone's services and it only costs a phone call.

If anything, it leaves the door open should you make a mess of things and you need his help once again. An amicable end to things is always preferable.

Best of luck with it anyway.

I did that recently with my ex accountant. We had actually been discussing me doing my own return as he was thinking of retiring.

Sent him a few emails and nothing heard from him. tried ringing and nothing. Talking to revenue, I discovered that he had been filing my tax return and forging my signature instead of filing in the part as my accountant. I was paying him good money to do it. Luckily he never did anything to get me into trouble or "misplace" any funds, but maybe I was lucky.....

I have done my own taxes for the last few years with no issues....

    Hi

Signing off a clients return without their agreement is a complete no-no. It potentially leaves you seriously exposed if the client comes back afterwards and says they did not agree with the return. Only if there are rare issues would I ever allow it and even then I would be sure to get the client to sign the return immediately afterwards. Are you sure the accountant was qualified?

At the end of the day if he did not ring back that is his problem. You acted in a professional way and if he is a professional he will act in a professional way towards you.

    Best Regards

    Hi dbran.

Yes I am sure he is an accountant. He is quite well known and serves on a few boards....

I had kept an eye on what he was submitting etc, but never actually checked where he signed the return.

I just put it down as leason learned..... As I said above my accounts are up to date etc, so I never did anything about it and the fact I never heard back from him, confirmed I did the right thing...
