Mudguard advice

I know this is an age old question and I've trawled through the Boards archives reading past threads on the subject.
    However, I'm none the wiser....
Last year I bought a set of Crud mk2s for my Cube road bike (23mm tyres).
All was fine until I've just bought a set of 25mm 4 Season tyres.
The rubbing noise of rubber v plastic drove me insane, so off they came in a fit of "mudguard rage" by the roadside 1 day (had a Basil Fawlty moment and gave them a dam good thrashing).
No sufficient clearence between guard & 25mm tyre.

I've dredged through the net looking for mudgards designed for road bikes...seems the options are limited.
I've read the reviews on SKS race blades but they also seem to have issues.
I'm in 2 minds whether to just put up with having a wet, cold, muddy, cow sh1t covered arse on me winter spins along our country roads or invest once again?
    Any advice appreciated...

I got an "ass guard" today. Works quite well, cheap and simple to fix to your bike. Only for the back wheel though. Wouldn't have a clue for the front wheel, sorry.

Where on the Cruds were they rubbing?

I couldn't get the cruds to fit my Cube peleton race with 25c tyres either. I used the sks longblades last winter and they fell apart in spring. Bought the cruds as an alternative but had to go back to sks when they would not fit. Both front and back mudguard are falling apart already:confused::mad:
Not much help to you, but I'm getting around this by yesterday ordering a Genesis Equilibrium frame and building it up with proper mudguards for the winter and audaxing!:D

I have SKS raceblades 4 years now (ca 60km per week) and they are fine. Have to fine tune them every so often, and had to stick some glue on them last year to hold part of them in place, but they still work as well as the day I got them.

SKS Chromoplastic. I have eyelets for mudguards on my bike so it was easy to fit them. It wasn't plug and play though but with a bit of planning and drilling they're perfect for 700x25!

They were rubbing all round the centre of the rear guard (didn't put front 1 on).
When i took the rear Crud off, i could see the rub line right down the inner spine of the guard.
I ride a Cube Agree Gtc Race and have just fitted Conti 4 Season 25mm tyres on it.
There is just not sufficient clearence between tyre and guard and i've no more scope to lift the guard any higher.
So unless I ever change back to 23s I'm afraid the Crud mk2 will be retired.

I've read allot about the SKS road blades, but opinions seem very mixed??

Can't remember which tyre I had (think it was a bontrager), but when I changed to conti 4seasons (both 23mms) the back one started rubbing a bit and I eventually had to remove my crud mk2 rear guard. Is it possible that some tyres sit 'taller' off the rim than others?

Fitted the SKS Raceblade XL last week, took approx 3 minutes no rattle or any faults detected yet, well except my cycling mate taking the proverbial and showering me with sh1t on the front every chance he got, he purchased a set himself after seeing how clean my rear was. Bought mine from Swimcyclerun next day delivery..

I have Tortec Razor blades on one of the bikes. They are similar to Raceblades but have an adjustment on each stay to allow you lift it away from the tyre.

They provide (I think ) a bit more leeway than Raceblades and may work. However I do use them with 23c tyres so cant say for definite.

Ass saver, neat, does the job.

And despite what people say, the rider behind to is gonna get sprayed one way or the other!

    Thanks all.
Going to give the SKS XL Race blades a go.
Too much sh1t round my local country roads to get away with no mud guards, even though I cycle alone :( and have nobody behind me.

I've sks race blades a few years now and they are fine.
They don't however cover the front of the back wheel. ie the front derailler and chainrings get a lot of crud which to me is a weak point ..is there a similar but longer set of these available?
    Marty.

Most people use them because they don't have adequate frame clearance for longer ones. If you have the clearance, there are much better mudguard options available.

    SKS XL Road Blades arrived.
But can't for the life of me, work out how to fit the front 1
Rear went on fine but front 1 rubs the wheel and if I lift it, then the hard plastic angled top strap hits the under side of the bike frame.
Anyone know how to solve this?

I had to aggressively bend it so it would take the right shape, the metal bits would spring back out of shape, so I had top drill it and use the provided screws to keep the right bend for the job.

Have actually tried that approach.. i.e. bending the metal stays..but havn't quite worked out the fit yet?
Tis like a chinese puzzle

What's the best mudguards for a giant defy, currently have giant ones but their a bit worse for wear and lbs no longer stocks them. It has proper fixing points but minimal clearance.

I have the Tortec Reflector on the winter bike with 25mm tyres for the last 3 winters... the narrow ones.
They are good mudguards and reflective too...
