I see that GJB is the most popular sire of pedigree calves born in 2013. What do you think of him from a commercial point of view?

they have been some very calves off him this year at the sales. personally I'm not a fan of Rossiter as the ped's I have had off him were poor for age and took most feeding to get ready for sale (comparing with calves from same Dam in prior years and since). There is Eisenhower in GJB dam side which will drive size and would make a little more difficult in calving. The size is definitely a help to commercials.

Its a pity the AI's did not buy a son of Nord while they were plentiful for AI as there were some great beef cattle from him, under estimated as a sire and some of his sons are really doing the business in ped herds

Anybody go? Roads were dodgy enough this morning.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I went yesterday. Don't know the exact clearance percentage as I left before it finished but the sale had some big money and then some low prices. There was a good few northern buyers. The champ bull made 4800, res male made5,000 there were a few more bulls that I saw make between 3,500 and 5,000. The femal champ made 6,100 and res was unsold at 3,300 in the ring. Again there were some big prices paid for females including some of the in calf ones

There were nearly 70 heifers at it and this is approx 15 too many for the sale yesterday.

The only downside yesterday was the judging was slow and this delayed the sale start time

Another call out was it was a good day for the irish cancer soc as one member (donal spring and Geraldine Shanley) donated a heifer that sold for 4,100 and the irish angus society are paying all fees paid on the heifer to the cancer soc also. Money that will be put to great use. A big thanks should go to the buyer and the herd for donation

There will probably be a heifer auctioned for charity each year going forward because I already know of 4 other members that have offered cattle for such a worthy cause.
