Just curious - how much have people set up to tip when prepaying for their Hailo taxi journey?

How much do you tip in a restaurant?

There's no set rule, its completely down to you.

I tip depending on service (which you can't in this case)

So just leave it at zero on your Hailo profile and give the driver a cash tip for good service, or nothing.

    Depends on the service.

whereas a Waiter can be really helpful and worthy of a tip, a Taxi Driver just drives you , why would you tip him? you don't tip the Bus Driver do you?

It's a fair point, not so much because of the principle but because in Ireland most taxis are driven by the owner so I don't feel obliged to give a tip for a routine trip of a few kms. where there's no real scope for service above and beyond the call of duty.

In fact I find that when they see that you're not a tourist or 'up from de country', a lot of Dublin taxi driver don't expect a tip and often round the fare down like the fare is €8.35, I hand over a tenner and they give me back €2 change.

Yes, it would be a different matter if he jumped out and helped you load/unload heavy cases etc...then a tip would be in order, but otherwise, no.

    0% it is then!

Well one thing to remember is that Hailo takes 12% of the fare, so giving a tip can make up for this lose to the driver. Of course that isn't any obligation to do this, radio companies also charge taxi drivers often far more and normally it is just a cost of doing business that the driver needs to absorb in order to get extra work.

However from a customers perspective I find Hailo so good and easy to use, vastly superior to radio companies or even just waving down a taxi, that I'm happy to give an extra tip to help promote Hailos use amongst Taxi Drivers.

I usually give a 10% tip by default when using Hailo, while that doesn't cover the full Hailo 15% charge, I think it is enough to take the edge off it and I think it is fair for the driver to cover some of their business costs.

Generally, I don't tip taxi drivers because they rarely do anything to deserve it.

When I do tip, I prefer to give cash - it leaves less of a 'paper trail' ;)

Also, if you tip on Hailo, does the full amount go to the driver or does the company take a slice?

I think I will just adjust depending on mood before I order the taxi! :)

Another thing - I live in recently built apartments and it doesn't pick up the address I wonder is there anyway of getting Hailo to add the address to their database

The company takes 12% of the tip too! So if you have the cash, then better to tip by cash, but it isn't required.

However another way of looking at it, which I assume most drivers would disagree with, is that you are tipping because you had a good trip experience and that Hailo played a large part in that good experience * and thus they deserve a slice of the tip too.

    * IMO From a customers perspective, Hailo is the best thing since sliced pan and they are the best thing to happen to the taxi industry since deregulation.

You should write to them and ask, I've wrote to them about issues before and I find them very helpful.

Also, when you use Hailo, it will identify your location via GPS. However you can edit the name of the house or building in Hailo to correct it. It then saves the address in recents, so the next time you can just select it from there.

However it shouldn't even be necessary to do that. The driver can see your location via GPS on his phone. Though it does seem some drivers are idiots, more then a few times I've gotten drivers calling me asking for directions! I'm thinking, can't you just follow the bloody GPS!!

I have my Hailo set to 5%, and tweak it up to 10% mid-journey if I'm getting a good service from the driver (no need to explain how to get where I'm going, nice car, etc.).

I've had that happen too, even after going to the effort to locate myself exactly on the map when it's a little out. I'll tweak the tip down to 0% in that instance.

That'll be interesting, everytime you have sex, good meal, winning result on the soccer etc. the driver gets a tip. :)

Just edit it in the app

Actually quick correction there, Hailo commission is 12% of the fare, not 15%

The location is only as accurate as your gps, if the gps locks onto you incorrectly it will send the driver the incorrect location, this happens frequently when you are in the front/back garden (to get a better signal ) when the gps will report you being in the next street, if you don't notice and just order the taxi the driver will be one street out ( sometimes more )

Got a taxi on Sat night when it was busy and the Hailo app seemed to crash.
I asked the driver, and he said because so many drivers knew it'd be a bumper night, they all switched off the Hailo and took on street fares instead... leaving the app flooded with too many users and not enough taxies!

Good enough reason to tip on Hailo then, to ensure a prompt service!

True, though not in my case, single road surrounded by apartment buildings either side, even if slightly off, it would still be in the correct area/road. Also it seems very accurate to me, it is using wifi/mobile network to assist the GPS.

Which leads me to wonder if the drivers app shows how accurate the GPS reading is. Smartphones usually show the accuracy of the GPS reading. If this was communicated to the drivers app, then the entry could be marked green if the reading is within a few meters, thus no need to call.

I think the problem to ours is it is picking up a road beside the apartments which doesn't lead anywhere near where the apartment entrance is. :(

Well the funny thing is that if I look at my jobs on the driver app, it gives me a list of previous jobs and out of 55, 23 don't have a door number at all!

Now some of these are business addresses but even of those only 2 or 3 actually have the business name on the call

EDIT Often enough unless I have a reasonable idea of what business it is that I'm going to I'll just ignore the call, especially when the adress comes up as Unnamed Road or suchlike

You know you call also move the location to correct it? Just move the underlying map so that the marker is over your actual location.

But please be very careful when doing it, if you zoom in or out on the map it will move the marker as you zoom, I have had people who did it this way and they are miles out from where they wanted to enter. Usually because they zoom out to get an idea of where the taxis are :)

I'll tip in cash if the driver can manage to be polite and know where we're going when I get in, and then keep his/her gob shut unless I start the conversation after that. But if I get an earful that I don't need ... not a chance.

Once I register a debit card do I have to have the actual debit card with me when I make the journey?

I don't like carrying cards and prefer to use cash but I have a free €15 code to use.

At the end of the journey do you have to do anything on your phone to do with paying?

Sorry I've never used this app.
