Does anyone know if you need to do a hillstart at the second stop sign as you leave the test centre in Navan?

You don't NEED to use the handbrake if you don't need to or want to. So long as you don't allow the car to role backwards.
Are you talking about the one coming out at the gate or the one at the main road?

If you're in any doubt use your handbrake but you won't pick up any marks for not using it unless you roll back

If you think you're going to be there a while i.e the traffic is heavy then use the handbrake. If not just lift the clutch and move into traffic when there are open spaces in both lanes if you're turning right.

Thanks for the response. Its the one at the main road. My reason is that you have to come to a complete stop at the stop sign/white line and you are on an incline. I have moved off from there without using the handbrake and havent rolled back but I am just wondering what the best practice is.

Pretty sure you have to use the handbrake here. Best to do it anyway, nobody wants to fail before you get started! Check with your instructor to make sure.

I am an instructor there. As I said, there is absolutely no requirement to use it but of course you can, and should use it if you think you'll roll back. The left turn is slightly easier as the incline is less severe than the right.

If in doubt use it, if you don't need ie your clutch control is spot you then don't. Nerves can also be a factor at the start so if in doubt use it. The testers however won't particularly care either way once you're not rolling back or sitting there for an age

Thanks all for the helpful responses. I failed my test unfortunately, coasting too much on the clutch. I hadnt really been aware of it till recently. Everything else went really well so thats a positive. I'll work on the clutch work and apply again.

I didnt do a hill start at the stop sign, I was turning left and the way was clear on the road so I moved out without any problems.

Yeah only use the clutch when changing gear and coming to a stop. When slowing down for traffic lights etc I work my way down to 2nd (for my test), then clutch down and stop. It's a bad habit to get into and one that sticks with you as well if you just coast along in 3rd etc to a stop.

Best of luck for your next test!
