2011 BMW F10 with Logic7 (TOP HIFI, fibre optic based) retrofit, along with Hearthquake woofers and Gladen speakers all around.

Car coded to TOP HIFI too, so the audio signal is then sent over fibre optic to the amplifier and EQ settings now available from the iDrive menu.

Car flashed to the latest software while I was there.

the build quality on that BM leaves a lot to be desired, boot opening with a standard spring instead of gas struts, this crack about putting the battery where the spare wheel should be , and not even fitting tweeters is a nightmare.

The more you move up in model's years the more simple design and cheap parts are used. Every single F10 I worked on has faulty hashtray and half broken electric parking brake button.

Now the F10 is well put together, the clips are very solid and the car is tight overall, but yes you can definitely feel there is a cost cutting approach year on year when you move up. Many parts are made in China in those BMW, that includes the base speakers. It is even written on them. The iDrive radio software is developed in India.

The battery location is one thing, but the fact you have to have to use sockets and clip removal tools to access your battery is ridiculous.

Are the springs not to allow the boot to spring open by itself when opened? Mercedes have been doing it for years.

Yeah that's right actually. E60 has it too.

You have to remember too that when the F10 was launched almost 5 years ago, prices started at just over €42k for the entry level model which undercut both the E Class and A6.

But what ever happened to the quality hydraulic system of old , sure it was expensive and messy , but it made you go oooh

Worse than them damn boot springs (Nissan were using gas struts in the Primera 22 years ago!) are them damn "C" shaped hinges that rob a load of boot space. Nissan were using a hinge design with two hinged bars that allowed for approx 120 degrees of movement and folded into the boot lid. With gas struts it robbed no boot space.

As for the springs, for feck sake Ford used horizontal springs tucked under the parcel shelf 50 years ago in the Escort. Progress how are ya!

It's still used, but is an optional extra. Always was.
