Played in Tralee On Saturday and it was the first time Ive ever had to use one of these winter mats when the ball was on the fairway. Got to say I dont like them. Id rather move to the rough and play off the ground.

These are the mats they use

Your ball is well off the ground so you trying to hit the ball from a position you are not used to. I know these mats are used in alot of links clubs but I had always presumed it would be more like a piece of carpet where your ball wouldnt be up from the ground very much.

Does your club use them and how do you find them? I think I would stop golf for the winter if they were brought into my club.

No and I don't think I would like them either. In Moate we are just using one mat - on the 3rd teebox - at the minute so that's manageable.

Thankfully we don't use them in my club otherwise i would find it hard to get myself to play. You might as well go to the driving range as hit off them mats!!!

Do you have to put a tees in the holes to hold it in place when you strike the ball ?

tbf the ball is no higher than it would be hitting from the rough or semi rough...

We are having to tee up every shot through the fairways. It's quite good trying shots and clubs you normally would not.

Just because those are the mats provided, doesn't mean you can't just a different type of mat, as long as it protects the ground.
Mate of mine has to use them at his club, he bought a small piece of good quality astro-turf, much better.
Thank God my club doesn't use them

I have always been grateful that Seapoint Golf Links in Co. Louth never use these mats and only on rare occasions make small elements of the fairway out if use. Majority of winter golf course conditions at Seapoint is the same as summer.

No way I'd play in the winter if I had to use them. That's not proper golf at all.

Same reason I don't place the ball in winter unless it's completely neccessary, playing off perfect lies from the rough all winter is not good for your game when the actual proper qualifying golf starts up again and you have to play it as it lies.
