Incisional Hernia after Laparotomy

In June of this year I underwent a hemicolectomy and had 70cm of my bowel removed. The incision was a laparotomy approx 3 cm in length running down past my belly button. After my long recovery I noticed that I had a hole in my stomach above my belly button and my stomach was sticking out like it never had before. I went to see my gastro and he informed me that I had an incisional hernia. He is recommending that I have open surgery and stitches to correct the hernia in mid 2015. He is not recommending key hole surgery and mesh as a result of my previous bowel issues. So looks like another laparotomy for me and more recovery. Has anyone out there had an abdominal incisional hernia repaired by open surgery using stitches to close the hole? What was the recovery like and any general advice?
