New boiler required?

We have been having ongoing problems with our oil fired Warmflow exterior boiler, 9 years old. After countless plumbers it's still acting up. Now fed up I'm looking at replacing it.

The grant Vortex keeps being recommended. What do people think, are the other reliable, well supported brands that we should be considering?

Ideas on cost would be welcome too.

    Many thanks.

What ongoing issues you been having?

Tripping mostly, having to go out and manually restart, every day for the last while, now no ignition at all.

If you have money to spend the grant vortex is the best oil boiler on the market with the grant euroflame not too far behind. On the other hand if you could get a proper oil technician to fix and service your warmflow you wont have any problems either.ps. do you have to reset the red button on the burner or the reset button on the thermostat

When you say no ignition at all. What is happening now?

Oil boilers are good and reliable.

    Your problem is human.

Boilers and their ocasional problem are simple to fix and dignose for a experenced professional.

Thanks folks, obviously a repair is the preferred option but have not had much success there.

Yes, pressing the the red button, it makes all the right noises hisses for a few seconds, then cuts out. The diode thing (the sensor that looks for flame?) was replaced recently and the T-stat also was checked and found to be OK.

Braddun, i think that link you put up is no help at all..It for a high limit stat tripping on the boiler. In this particular case the burner is going to lockout.A completely different fault. It the reset button on the burner

OP if you wish to say what area you are in,maybe someone here could recommend a proper service technician who will 100 percent sort the issue

Braddun, and to add, that link it for a combo boiler also, and is causing a problem with DHW, so I am afraid it also appears you have no idea about boilers. Your post was neither insightful or helpful, so mind the trolling and the *'d expletives as both will earn an infraction.

    Thanks Tony

Really appreciating this advice, I am in North Wicklow, 10 mins south of Bray, if someone want to PM I have no problem with that at all. I'm encouraged that you feel this is solvable with the right expertise.

    Is the boiler wired right?

Warmflow are not as straight-forward as an older type.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,008 ✭✭✭scudo2

If you ring warmflow, the first thing they will ask you is your credit card number !!
THEN what is the problem !!

Wireing is straight forward through their normal dual stat. Not the best stat in my opinion + I don't like the external probes and tiny reset button.

would agree with all the others re getting somebody that knows oil boilers

unless your boiler is leaking there should really be no need to change it

I know of a plumber any boiler he was called to unless a new nozzle fixed the problem he used to advise customers they needed a new burner

needless to say he had quite a stash built up

Many thanks nmacc, phoned him and he sounds like a gent, a boiler specialist and not a plumber who does boilers!

Fingers crossed we can get this thing sorted once and for all.

Thank you everyone for all the advice, it has been invaluable.

Make sure your engineer is going to use a Flue Gas Analyzer and your going to get a print out of how he is leaving it for you along with a full service report.

Update, boiler is up and running, the pump was knackered and replaced. This probably accounted for the recent days of cutting out.

The chap nmacc recommended was in the neighborhood and by the time I was able to get home to met him the boiler was repaired. Could not have been more impressed. He is based in Wicklow, if anyone needs an oil boiler specialist I'll happily PM his details.

Plumbers who do boilers can be "specialists" too. Probably more so because they understand the wet side of the boiler as well

Off topic so please move if required. I need to get a new oil boiler for an old house that never had one before.
I have been looking at Warmflow, Firebird, Grant Euroflame and Grant Vortex. It would be used for max. 1-2 hours per day and not at all probably from April to October.
Can anyone recommend which one I should go with. Warmflow is cheapest and Grant Vortex is most expensive.

Any advice or experience with any of the above would be very much appreciated. Thanks
