Seems to be only upon request and and as part of a criminal investigation. No indiscriminate tapping allowed.
And crucially its a two way thing, Ireland can also make similar requests to foreign governments for information which might help any gardai investigations.

    Not seeing the problem here.

The problem is there was an attempt to hide it via statutory instrument without any debate or public discussion not withstanding what right do foreign law enforcement agencies have to our data?

It really saddens me that this got passed without debate and forces secret courts on companies that don't comply. And it saddens me more that this is less important than water charges to people.

Even looking at the replies on here and on the article: if it doesn't affect their pockets directly, Irish people don't give a sh*te.

Well you should see my e-mails. A bit of spam, some implying that I'm not as big a man as I could be, and a couple of e-mails from Amazon saying they're out of stock. The phonecalls are even hotter.

    They're more than welcome :D

People forget that years ago, every single phone call was monitored. If they weren't, Sylvia's Mother by Dr.Hook would be a rubbish song.

Who gives a fcuk? Let them listen away.

Is right. If you send a text to a person in the next room it is routed through the UK and the USA so that GCHQ, MI5, the FBI and the CIA can get a look at it. Keeps them busy.

On the plus side, if you loose an email or file, just ring up the lads and they will tell you where it is.

Are you the sales rep for your company? Could they be work emails?

Am I gainfully employed by Amazon? No, though I do buy quite a bit of stuff from them :D

The provision for the secret courts is exceptionally unusual.

“Even with very sensitive cases in Ireland they’re not prosecuted in camera,” said TJ McIntyre, lecturer at University College Dublin’s school of law and chairman of advocacy group Digital Rights Ireland. “It’s worrying because it means telecommunications companies might be pressured into doing things that aren’t entirely legal.”

The companies would be prosecuted in secret, and would be unable to disclose their objections publicly – or even the fact that they were being prosecuted.

Whatever about allowing foreign agencies to snoop on Irish citizens, that above bit sounds kinda troubling.
