The BBC Trust is to launch a public consultation on the future of BBC3 next month

I thought the plan was to replace BBC Three with BBC One+1 & make BBC Three a streaming service only on BBC iPlayer.

Those are the plans of BBC management, yes. But the BBC Trust won't approve them without a public consultation. Could be months if not another year before it is implemented.

Most of BBC3 is rubbish anyway. Putting the domestically produced comedy stuff online makes sense considering its target audience.

    BBC3 is not going anywhere.
It will still be around in 3 or four years.

The Beeb as we know might not be around in 3 years if the Conservatives get back into government as they are suggesting that the TV licence might go when their Royal Charter comes back up for review in 2016 and the Conservatives are muttering quite openly about the Beeb's news coverage favouring Labour.

    How so ?

Does replacing BBC3 with (yet another) "plus one" channel really represent best practice by a public service broadcaster ? And how is it going to generate cost savings if the content is still being produced regardless ?

Why not put content online AND on conventional broadcast platforms.

It doesn't have to be a case of either/or

    Being Human,
    Films

Look at all the stuff that's come from BBC Radio 4 to TV,
BBC 3 should be serving that function

+1 isn't all that useful when practically everyone's got PVR , Catch Up TV , BBC Player etc.

If you miss a program then having it repeated a day or week later means you have a much better chance of seeing it than just +1

In the past they tried to close local stations based on cost vs. listenership until it was pointed out that BBC Radio 3 cost a lot more to run per listener.
