Have you paid yet. Lot of lads won't let cattle leave without money going through.

Check card's are right and cattle in test. If you paying tomorrow, he might keep cards til money goes through.

Seller gets your herd number. Do up a movement cert on agfood or have to apply. then you can accept it online or post it back. 3 certs. One for you. One for him. One for dept.

Load cattle and off ya go.

dont think this lad is registered on Agfood so its the paper route. I already gave him a cheque and he happy to accept it. Seems a real decent genuine lad. I'll give him my number tomorrow and he can do the paperwork and send on the cards.

Did you check the cards before paying lots of dealers selling cattle pretending that they are their own?

Yes checked cards and was a little confused, cattle original from several farms in Clare & Galway but he bought at Mart in Tipp in 2 lots of 6.
Said he bought them two months ago and now finds he hasnt the space in his shed as he also has bigger cattle to come in.
Saw the yard and shed and the cattle suit me.
Qty2 Cards had 2 signatures & 8 had one signature, I bought the 8 with one signature, so I assume these will only have 2 moves? Would I be correct on that

He sounds like a dealer. do you mean one signature on the back of the card or the signature of the farmer where the animal was born? If it's one signature on the back that will be 2 moves.

Yes one signature on the back of the card and that signature was his.
This fellow doesn't seem to be a dealer and the place certainly doesn't look like a dealers yard. Small tidy yard he has a small twin cow box cattle trailer and car with a hitch, but nobody could be sure of anything.
CH & CHX cattle May2014 300kg approx, what would u think about 2 moves?

He sounds like a dealer to me, I'd say it's unlikely a farmer would sell weanlings on after only having them a couple of months.

I think you're right about this, it's not possible to look up somebody elses cattle afaik. You say you've never bought cattle on farm before, maybe this lad is ok but I'd be careful if I was you.

Are you going to finish them or sell them in the mart? When you sell in the mart they will show up as 3 moves shouldn't make much difference. I saw a yearling in a mart last year with 7 moves  he sold the same as the rest and made a good price.

Thanks but Link wont open on my phone what is it too?

It talks about the risk of bringing disease or infection into a farm when buying in cattle from different places. It gives advice about keeping bought in cattle separate from your main herd if possible.

    thanks Sam Tanko,
i asked him twice where he bought the cattle and he said in the mart and as i was going i asked again if he bought these directly from a dealer, he said he didnt and i kind of believe him.
The thing that bothers me is the cattle came from several different herd numbers in Clare /Galway and yet ended up in a mart in Tipperary sold in 2 lots of 6 and when my man said he bought them, his is the only name on the back of the cards (well 8 out of the 12)
now that i think of it, the mart numbers stamped on the cards seem to be different suppose indicating different marts?

I'll be going back tomorrow and have a right good chat with the man and see exactly whats the story is, but the cattle are spot on hence the reason i didnt walk away straight away.
Suppose if something doesn't seem right at the start it usually isnt ...!

I don't understand how calves from different herds can be sold in the same lot in a mart.

Kingston, obliviously you liked the stock otherwise you wouldn't have bought them. I wouldnt be listening to all this handbag stuff thats been posted here. You asked a simple question about the process to put into your herd etc and now after listening to few people who made bad decisions,( and it was the dealers fault !!!!) it sounds like your getting second thoughts. Collect the cattle, get some luck money, look after them and they ll look after you.

Handbag stuff :D Dealers sell on cattle for a quick turnover they usually have the cattle overpriced which means you'll make less profit out of them. If I were dealing through a dealer again I would get him to buy direct from the mart and I would pay the mart and dealers fee that way you know their weights and you are buying at market value.

there's ways round that too for dealers Sam. Seen it done.
if ya don't know or trust dealer shouldn't be dealing with him.

Called to meet my man this morning after he came back from mass !!!
Different story today, seemingly he bought the cattle last week not 2 months ago and all had more moves than the cards indicated.
Anyway long story short I got my cheque back and that the end of that saga.
The man seemed so genuine and kept saying to me this morning "he was sorry for telling all the lies yesterday and shur no harm done!"

First time to attempt to buy privately and a bit of an eye opener.
Pity there wasnt a way to check movements online 'on the day' as mentioned on other posts here previously save a lot of nonsense....

again thanks to all who posted with advice, appreciate it.

Yeah, you would want to know the dealer and be there while he's buying for you.

Glad you got it sorted, I was thinking that a dealer wouldn't be keeping cattle for 2 months to turn a quick profit. The advice wasn't handbag stuff after all :) Did he have them advertised on donedeal?

always handy to check on dd for other ads from same seller. There a tab for that. Can show up dealers if a good few.

Sam kade you must have got stung badly at some stage. Not all dealers sell with a balaclava at gunpoint. It takes 2 to tango.

Are you a dealer Willie? I don't have anything against dealers they are only making a living the same as everyone else, the part I don't like is when they tell lies to make themselves appear not to be dealers ;)

Not a dealer but occasionally use them to source stock. Some i wouldnt trust, thus avoid. I would prefer to buy of a dealer that came with stock straight from a farm than cattle that were bought in a mart, mixing with hundreds of other cattle. If i want cattle, like them and the price is right ill buy of a dealer.
Ideal world would be to get cattle direct from farmers but Some people may not be able to get time to buy cattle and rely on dealers. After all the cattle probably came from the likes of sam kade or tubby or myself.no point tarring all dealers with the one brush... would you sell to a dealer ????

I got a dealer to buy in the mart one time and sold the cattle back to the same dealer and i was happy enough with the price.
