Petrol in a diesel saab

As the title says, we accidently put €30 petrol in a 2005 saab 93, 1.9l diesel. There was approx €15-20 diesel in the tank. Luckily we noticed our error before we started the engine so sitting here now waiting for a tow truck to come out. Does anyone know a rough figure that the mechanics will charge for draining the tank? The tow is covered by our insurance company.

The AA charge €245 upwards, probably depends on how much fuel has to be drained and disposed of. An independent mechanic might be cheaper.

Sounds like just a labour charge, so I wouldn't be too happy paying any more than 50€. Just has to be drained, no mechanical work needs to take place.

why do you need a tow truck if you didn't start the engine? You should be still in the station forecourt. Just drain the fuel and fill up properly and away you go.

A drain will be about €200

Proper disposal of the mixed fuel ain't going to be cheap.

Depends where the OP is....a lot of guys would just throw that straight into a tractor (as long as it's Tank was already half full or so);).

Biggest question is, Does the Saab Tank have a Drain-Plug or not ?

Yes not sure where you would bring it, council bring centres will take oil and hazardous household waste but doubt they take fuel.

Thanks for all the replies, costing us €150 so seems to be a good enough price, sounded very high initially but never thought about the disposal of the fuel.

We are in clare, only moved there recently so haven't got a regular mechanic we could call about it. We wouldn't have the tools or knowhow to drain it ourselves.

Mr tatyo was there at the filling station giving out free crisps and distracted DH when he getting fuel. Didn't even get a free bag of tatyo in the end :(

To be honest, you probably would have been fine if you'd filled the thing to the brim with diesel and driven on and brimmed it again after 50 miles. It was about 20l out of a 60l tank, I've had friends who've got away with a far higher percentage.

That said, ultimately you did the correct and responsible thing :)
