Problem with taxing car

I just tried to renew my car tax online but when I selected from the insurance company list on the combo box on motortax.ie, the insurance company I am insured with were not listed(Enterprise Insurance Company Plc).
I emailed the tax office about it but got no reply. I will probably have to go to the tax office in person to sort this but I just said I would stick up a post here first in case somebody has had this problem already.

This. Nothing is cross checked so anything that will get you past the screen is fine.

I always thought some sort of check is done in the background to validate the insurance but if you say not I believe you.

Find out who the underwriters are and use that name - I had a similar problem a few years ago, and the people in the motortax office told me to do that; after all, if you changed insurer during the year you wouldn't have to apply for a new tax disc just because the name of the insurer is different.

It seems to be something they never anticipated when they introduced the online renewal facility. Previously I'd go into Nutgrove with the paperwork, the clerk at the counter would scan my insurance cert and hand it back to me. In order to validate it in the online system, they would need to link to every insurance company's IT system to verify that policy 'XYZ' was in the name of so and so and covered car reg no xxx D nnnn, the insurance companies probably told them this would take 10 years to implement and they decided to go ahead anyway with effectively no check at all.

With all the leaks in the system between the Gardai and Social Welfare, the insurance companies probably weren't too enthusiastic about giving anyone access to their systems anyway.

Is that Enterprise Insurance Gibraltar or Enterprise Insurance Ghana, they are the 1st two that google throw up for me.

I suspect that you'll need to put in the underwriters as in Lloyds or whomever similar to here

I had the same issue when I did my tax online. Do you have your policy document? It would have the underwriters written on it. I have the same company written on my insurance disc but Wrightway Underwriting Ltd. is written in large on the policy document (and this was the company name that was referred to when I did the insurance through brokers). But I am not sure if you would have the same underwriters or not.

The Motor Tax Office do not have access to an insurance database to verify your insurance company or policy number. You can put in last years insurance company or policy number and the site will still accept it.

I'm with nononsense which is FBD, so I select FBD and vaguely guess at my expiry date. Or just pick one. Any which one.
My insurance policy number is the old "drag two finger across the keyboard":

Nothing is checked, since this is an Irish computer system it's just a website that doesn't connect to anything outside itself, except whatever system takes your money.
Strangely enough, the Irish civil service cannot program databases that talk to each other to save their lives (Leap cost hundreds of millions and 10-15 years to implement and I think it's still chimps sending bits of parchment to each other via pneumatic tube post), but when it comes to designing systems to take your money, they display a ruthless efficiency that will put the Germans, Swiss, Swedes and the Spanish Inquisition to shame.
Just look at property tax and TV license. The energy they put into enforcing those, if that was put into the general running of the country, all those jokes about German efficiency would be about Ireland.

Yeah I googled it myself and I got that back too so I don't know which one it is either. I chose Lloyds from the drop down anyway but if the Motor Tax Office doesn't have access to an insurance database to verify the insurance company or policy number (as bazz26 says) then one would wonder what is the point of listing them in the first place?
    I love this country.

Maybe EIC (Gibraltar) trade under different name in Ireland?

    Here is the official Motortax Dept. policy/FAQ with regards to their list of insurance companies;

    Insurance Details
The drop down insurance menu on www.motortax.ie contains the complete list of all registered companies for this country. If your insurer is not listed, you will need to contact them, as they may be a subsidiary of one of those listed. Alternatively you may check your insurance documentation, as your insurance company name may be listed on this.

Why not just put in the actual policy number and expiry date?

You can if you want or not. The point is that it makes no difference because the motor tax website doesn't have the ability to verify it at present your policy and hasn't since it was launched a good few years ago.

true enough. it just wouldnt occur to me to not fill it in correctly.

Yeah either some people just put their policy documents away where even they cannot find it or get into a panic if their insurance company is relatively new and not listed on the drop down menu.

For the record, Enterprise Insurance Company Plc have told my that they are represented by Wrightway Underwriting Ltd in Ireland, so this is the Insurance Company you need to select when renewing car insurance on motortax.ie
