Been to dentist with pain. It turns out I have an abscess at the base of a root of which the tooth is a crown. It's giving me a bit of pain alright. Dentist prescribed antibiotics and referred on to orthodontist for extraction. Dentist says cost approx 400~500. I don't have insurance nor have a medical card. Simple fact is I don t have 500 for this job. What other options are available? HSE waiting list maybe?

An orthodontist would not do an extraction. Was it an oral surgeon or an endodontist.
If it was an oral surgeon; 400-500 is expensive for just an extraction, but about right for a difficult extraction under sedation...
If it was an endodontist then the referral was for a root canal to save the tooth and not an extraction. 400-500 would be the price for a front or middle tooth, a molar would likely be more...

You need to clarify who and what the referral was for....

The referal was for an oral surgeon to surgically remove a crown that I had about 25yrs ago (lower jaw 2nd Bicuspid). The question I have is if they want €500 for the extraction but I cant afford it what other options are available?

Some of the dental school and hospitals have extraction schemes running at the moment . I'm not sure on the exact details but it might be something you could look into .

The fact that you were referred to an oral surgeon makes it unlikely that an undergraduate could do the extraction though.

Get a referral to someone who is not so expensive.... Again that is expensive for one tooth if under local anaesthetic...
