Expected MPG from 2014 Opel Corsa

I've recently purchased a 2014 used Opel Corsa 1.2l Petrol. I'm only getting around 25mpg which appears to me to be shockingly poor. Is this to be expected for this model? It's been used primarily for short journeys in built up areas.

I'd be curios to see if others with the same model get a similar mpg.

In the type of use the car gets, the mpg figure seems OK. Cold engine during cold season (you won't help it by having the heating on from the start), short runs in start/stop traffic - looks OK to me.

    Can you share your calculations?

Roughly speaking I've gotten 300km from 34.5 litres of fuel which translates to 8.7 km per litre which is 24.57mpg.

Maybe in American gallons, not UK so use this site below:

    EDIT: Wrong, whoops!

    http://mpg.webix.co.uk/

I think that's a little on the low side for the stop / start city driving rating, how hard are you driving it? Is it always full of people? Where is your petrol from?

    NOTE: For reference I drive a 1.8 Petrol 2007 Avensis and average c. 8.0 L/100KM with 50/50 city / motorway driving (low of 7.5, high of 8.5).

That is incorrect. The figure that OP is getting is 11.5 l/100km, which is less than 25 mpg. He quoted km per litre (I know, strange, but that what his figures are).

It's not being driven at all hard, petrol is from topaz. It's essentially costing 100 euro for 600 km in petrol

    I see that now ;)

What was the cost of the petrol per liter at the time? Are you filling it completely and letting it go borderline empty before you calculate range (reset clock on fill)?

I can only put €75 into my car and it's a saloon so €100 doesn't seem possible for a full tank on a Corsa.

Seems OK to me, if the journeys are say 5-6km or less.

I didn't mean I put 100 euro in one go. I've been waiting for the petrol light to come on then putting €50 in at 144.9 per litre, I've reset the clock immediately. The petrol light has come back on each time around 295km mark.

Seems very low mpg.. Our 08 honda jazz 1.2 is doing over 40 mpg last time I checked... Is it a sports model?

Firstly, you need to fill the tank. Then zero the trip and drive it until the light comes on and refill again. Measure the amount of fuel it required to fill it back up. There's a number of phone apps that will do this for you. Not brimming the tank when measuring leads to inaccuracy.

If it's heavy stop start traffic it's not an unbelievable figure.

And my 17-year old Honda 1.5 does 48.5 mpg, but so what... It all very, very much depends on the driving conditions - see the first post.

Driving is to and from school short five minute journeys hops to the shops sounds similar to original poster

Then your 40 mpg is actually a very good figure, assuming this is in the city traffic, but (some) Honda engines were always a good bit better on fuel than almost all the competition. The Jazz is very economical AFAIK.

If your just doing short start/stop journeys at 50km/h given the cold temporature at this time of the year where you have the heater on, lights on, rear window heater on it would seem perfectly normal.

Try resetting the clock and doing a motorway run of 100 kilometres to get a more reliable figure.

Just for comparison, our '05 Prius does this exact type of journey every day and at the moment returns 50MPG (64MG in summer). My '84 2.0l petrol automatic Mercedes 190 does a 10km trip into Dublin city centre traffic each morning and back again in evening traffic and does just under 20MPG. I really would have expected a modern small car to do much better than 25MPG, even given the journey type.

They're a bit asthmatic, but 25mpg does seem poor

I have the same car as a rental at the moment. Getting 31mpg on my commute, which is ten miles each way in Dublin city, about half of which is m50 and the rest urban stop start.

Based on a approx 42 litre fill getting 463km.

I'm getting on average 40 mpg on a 2007 1.8 mazda 6 and 50 mpg on a 00 1 litre yaris, usual journey 8 miles each way average 40 mph :) I was p1ssed off with the yaris when it only did 45.7 mpg on one tank usually 50 mpg.
