Bullbars

Hi everyone I was involved in what I thought to be a minor accident on Wednesday ... I was turning onto a main road and the jeep coming from my right hit my headlamp section and messed up my bumper and bonnet slightly. I've got a quote for the damage to my car for a couple of hundred euro... Not too bad.

When I had the accident the person on the jeep immediately came over and asked was I ok... Said there wasn't any major damage to their vehicle and I bore the brunt of the damage. They seemed to be v reasonable about it. They got a picture of my car but I , being in slight shock never got one of theirs.

Fast forward a couple of days, got a quote of almost 3000 for damage to their jeep. Bullbars to be replaced amongst the damage. I burst out crying! The other person admitted themselves they thought it was excessive. Thought I could fix up myself. They have refused to give me a picture of the damage to the car or get a second quotation.
    Any advice?

    Call your insurance company.

    I presume you have insurance?

If so, whose fault was it? Were you turning to your right or left? TBH if you were turning right, it sounds to me like your fault.

If it was, why not just let the insurance cover yermans damage? Wont cost you a penny now, may increase your premium slightly next year, but not by 3 grand!

Thanks , sounds like a good idea

When crashes happen, people exaggerate the damage to try and squeeze the most money out of the other persons insurance company. Insurance companies are wise to this. Your insurance company will send out an assessor to look at his damage, and they'll say it'll only cost E100 to fix. Then there'll be some forward-and-backward negotiating between the two, and they'll settle on a figure in the middle.

It always happens like this. I wouldn't worry about it.

I was in shock in the aftermath of the accident and I admitted fault and apologised. Will this invalidate my insurance?

Not invalid but since you admitted liability your insurance will be hit with full costs. You should never admit liability.

I know that now but I was just in a state of shock when I got out of the car. What a mess 😩

AFAIK anything said at the scene of a crash is ignored as the people involved are in shock and not in a fit mental state to be making decisions or statements. Still better to not admit fault though.

only certain types and after 2007 if I recall right.

They have to be more passenger friendly after that

Insurance company will assess the damage and only pay out what they deem reasonable.

If there was €3000 of damage to a jeep, your car would be a total write off, they are having you on. What was the make, age and model of the 4x4?

I'd also raise the bullbar issue with your insurer, if they had one that wasn't approved and not declared to their insurer it should be taken in to account

One problem with bullbars, especially cheap decorative ones is that in a collision they can make the damage far worse when they bend the mounting points and fold back in to the bodywork.

Sorry have to disagree with above. A "quote" for €3000 of damage could be very easy without visually looking like it.

I had a neighbour tip the front of my car. Didn't even notice the damage only they called into tell me, fair play to them. Just looked like a small dent in the front quarter panel. Obviously panel needed repair but turned out the impact had snapped the clips on the headlight, so new headlight needed. Bumper was slightly out. The amount of things in the front bumper that could be damaged with a small impact. I got quotes from €650 up to €1700. The works behind the bumpers are so much more complex than I ever thought, clips, dampers, brackets etc. Getting the quotes was such an eye opener.

Just saying I know it sounds excessive but €3000 could well be an honest cost of how much it would be to put right. Even if you got a photo it may well have been pointless until you poke about under the panels at all the small bits that may have been knocked.
