    hello,
to get a new irish passport you must make an aplication . my question is :
is there any problem if my surname in a birth certificate was Ibraham and i wrote the surname that will be appear on passport as Ibraheem ??
Also , all my documents which are required to be a proof of my identity and address , were written as Ibraheem ,,,
will my application be deleted ? or it is ok .
    thank you

You may be required to reconcile the spelling difference, e.g. via a deed poll, which may need to be registered with the courts.

Some people have an "also known as" line in their passport, e.g. Padraig Smith may be known as Paddy Smith and have a birth name as Patrick Smith.

Some countries insist that you list all spelling permutations on visa applications.

on my birthcert my name is spelt Steven but i've always spelt it Stephen myself and every document bill bank mortgage etc is Stephen. When I applied for my passport there was a section on it that asked what name is on your birthcert and what name you want to have appear on your passport....

As one Russian immigration officer said "This is not customer service. This is control."

The objective is certain as to someone's identity. Different spellings make that difficult. While they are the same name in Arabic, the different spelling in English (more correctly Latin characters).

Potentially, one could go for the traditional English spelling of Abraham. I'm sure you can understand the difficulty many people would have with reconciling that with Ibraheem.

of course i saw this section , did you face any problem about this differentiation ? and if my application was deleted , did they give me back my documents again to restart making a new one?

I'd be sure state bodies would claim a passport only ensures the citizenship of the holder, rather than their identity, when it might suit them....

For passports, the witness is a Garda. They prefer if you go to your local station.

You will need to check the rules for applying from abroad. It may not be the standard form.

I used to live in Northern Ireland and hold 2 passports, British & American. I live in America now, but looking to return. I have American passport that is valid but no British passport. Should I use my American passport or file for British passport? I had lived there in the 90s. I don't know what to do.

    NEED HELP

For most purposes, a US passport holder can enter the UK without a visa, so in practice you will be able to come in with just your US passport. However a US passport hold coming to the UK with the intention of remaining for a long stay needs a visa, and if they ask at the airport about your reasons for coming and you sugggest that you intend to remain it will all turn into a bit of a production.

Having said that, if your were born in the UK and your US passport shows that, it won't be hard to persuade them that you are UK citizen, but that your UK passport has expired so you are travelling on a US passport. They will give you a bit of a lecture about how UK citizens are supposed to use UK passports to enter or leave the UK, and then let you in.

    So, you will get in.

But it will generally be smoother and quicker if you present with a UK passport. (For one thing, you won't have to join the non-EU queue at immigration and, believe me, that may save you a lot of time.) And if, while living in NI, you intend to travel elsewhere within the EU, a US passport is OK but an EU passport is definitely the go.

So my advice would be to renew your UK passport. It's not essential, but it will reduce hassle and delay on your journey.

You should really address these questions to the passport office. If your surname on the passport application is different to the surname on the documents you provide, they may not be accepted and the application not processed.
