Emissions Fail

Brought my '92 Mini for the NCT and it failed on emissions. I originally thought I might get away with the old fuel additive before the test trick, but from looking around online, I think my figures are off the charts!

Would my first port of call be getting the mixture looked at? Car smells a bit fuelly with windows down, but MPG is decent, probably alittle poorer than I'd expect for a 1L Mini.

    Is it a carb'ed Mini ?
Easy enough to just lean it right off outside the Test Centre and then richen it back up after passing ;).

Also, increase the idle speed to say 1500 may help as well.

Yes its a carb. Thanks for the tips. Suspected it might be a case of leaning and richening back after! Getting it checked out next week.

When I bought the car the distributor timing was waaay off, car couldnt pull the socks of itself. Would this have the effect of reducing the emissions? Just wondering if it was something used by the last owner to get it passed.

It's possible....but surely they would have re-timed it after the test.
Apart from that it's much easier to reduce the emissions figure by just leaning it off, and bring the idle up a bit to stop it cutting out.
    Whereabouts are you based ?

    South east.

I came across a Mini guy based in Waterford through a club site whos going to take a look at it for me. Hopefully setting the carb will do the trick.

Any news on this Agricola ?

Sorry, thought I came back to this....

Yes got sorted in the end. Had the NCT in January. Scraped through with emissions of 3.05%
The guy I brought it to leaned the mixture. Didnt have to retard the timing. A weeks driving on dipetane too. So just hoping now that by the time the next test comes around, the system will be more cleaned out. Was advised to take off the head and use cutting paste on the cylinders to get rid of carbon buildup.
