Getting large photo printed from iPhone

    Hi all,

Searched the forum briefly but didn't really see anything fitting my criteria.

I'm trying to get a photo I took from my iPhone 5S printed and framed to give as a christmas present. Ideally I'd like the print itself to be 30"x20" in size. Tried to order one from photobox.ie, but it told me that my photo was too poor quality to print.

I'm a complete newb to photography, so I was wondering could anybody point me in the right direction as to how to get the photo printed? Could have it framed elsewhere, and size could be scaled down somewhat. Quality is important though, if I'm getting it printed this large will it look pixelated? Any help appreciated!

That is a very large print really, and I think the camera is an 8 megapixel one, which is pushing it for that size. It would look pixelated, and every flaw in the photo would be clear as day. I would print considerably smaller if it was me!

Also, such large prints are awkward in general, I have printed large in the past (using a DSLR 18 megapixels!) and I found no use for the photos, which simply sit rolled up in my wardrobe as they were just too big to use really. This depends what you want though!

Thanks for the reply. Was going to frame it and stick it on the wall, hence why I'd like to make it bigger! Do you think 16x12 or so would work or would I need to go smaller again?

What size is the photo on your iPhone?

    Its 960x1280.

you can still print them through photobox IIRC, they'll just look a bit crap. Standard dpi for a print would probably be considered to be around 300 or so, so your 960x1280 shot will print out nicely to 3x4 inches. You could probably push it a bit to 200dpi and get a 5x6 inch print or whatever but anything bigger is going to look poor...

I might be wrong now.. But I think traditionally a photograph (or, equally, pictures in a magazine, etc.) is printed at 300 pixels per inch (ppi). That allows for very high quality at close viewing.

A computer screen might be between 100 and 150 pixels per inch.

A billboard would be much lower again, which is fine because the viewing distance is from much further away - less than 50 ppi, possibly.

So if your image is 960 x 1280, at "top" quality (300 dpi), that'd be like, 3.2 inches by 4.2 inches... But 300ppi is probably unnecessary, particularly for a large photograph.

8x6 would be 150 ppi, and that would be okay, I think :)

If you wanted it at 16 x 12, it would be 80 dpi, and that would be okayyyy, but probably still a little low. I'm not sure you'd be happy with the finished product. You might get away with it viewing from a distance. I wonder if it was printed on a textured surface (like a canvas?) would the low ppi be less noticeable? I've never printed anything at this size, and I've never printed anything on canvas, so I'm not sure myself!

If you wanted it at about 30 x 20 (or, at that aspect ratio, 26.66 x 20), you'd be looking at 48 ppi, which would be quite low quality, unfortunately.
