Parental Leave/Tax

    Hi folks,
Have a few questions about the leave rights of parents in relation to having children etc.
I understand that each parent is entitled to 14 weeks per child to be used (unpaid) in the first eight years of a childs life.
My question is, if one parent is unemployed but gains employment when the child is say, a year, do they still have a ‘right’ to take the 14 weeks per child in the following seven years?
IE, does being unemployed at the time of the birth affect parental rights.
In relation to tax, is it fact or fiction that having a child midway in a year is beneficial from a tax perspective? Fact or fiction?

    Extract from Citizens Informations:
Generally you must have been working for your employer for a year before you are entitled to parental leave. However if your child is very near the age threshold and you have been working for your employer for more than three months but less than one year you are entitled to pro-rata parental leave. This is one week's leave for every month of employment completed.

If you change job and have used part of your parental leave allowance you can use the remainder after one year's employment with your new employer provided your child is still under the qualifying age

I would deduce from this that the full statutory entitlement must be made available as long as you are employed for at least one year, and following any change of employment you must also have worked for one year before qualifying for the same.

I would also deduce that as the entitlement is subject the age of the child then any delay in taking the full entitlement might result in losing some, i.e. attempting to take the full 18 weeks just before the child is no longer of the qualifying age.
