    Judge in the Lowry case :
    Judge Teehan said the information was that these civil proceedings are being maintained “in a champertous manner by persons or entities outside the state”.

    What does /is a champertous manner mean?

    a sharing in the proceeds of litigation by one who agrees with either the plaintiff or defendant to help promote it or carry it on.

    like a us lawyer getting a %age of the winnings or a non-lawyer bank rolling litigation?

    It would make things a lot simpler for everyone involved if a percentage could be quoted, rather than telling someone: 'ah, it's gonna be €250/hour plus VAT plus outlays but sure we'll be fair to ya." Ordinary punters just feel like vomiting on the carpet when they hear hourly rates. Hard to blame them really, but at the same time it's often very hard to quote a fixed price in litigation when nobody knows how much work the other side may cause.
