Freesat won't get you the Irish channels. RTE services & TG4 are available free on satellite, but not from your Sky dish.

Saorview, using an aerial, is the only way to get all the Irish services, incl. TV3, 3e & the soon-to-be-available UTV Ireland for free.

Yes, you just unplug the sat cable at the back and plug it into your new Freesat box. No broadband required.

As said above it wont get you the Irish channels, it will just get you the UK channels, http://www.freesat.co.uk/.

The only way to get the full range of Irish channels for free is to setup an aerial and receive Saorview, you either need a Saorview TV or Saorview box.

Setting up a Freesat box is simple if you have an existing sky connection.

    No need to shout.

Your Sky box doesn't just quit working when you cancel the sub. You might need to get a UK card from somewhere though, to make it less than a PIA to use.

Do you know which particular model of Sky box you have?

If you have the Sky card you can give this a go.

Take out the card and reinsert it upside down.

Unplug the box or switch off at mains. Wait a few seconds and plug it back in.

The box should reboot into the UK Default settings.

    I.E

    101 - BBC1
    102- BBC2
    103 - ITV

    etc

Yes, but some of the channels will be scattered and you would have to scroll through some sky channels to get to the channels you want, but apart from that you get the same channels.

Should be able to put them in a favourites list (up to 50 channels?) & use the blue button to flick through them.

    DONT WANT AN ARIEL

Good. ARIEL is WASHING POWDER and as such won't get TV anyway, but no doubt you realise that as you say DONT WANT AN ARIEL.

Have the exact same question as OP except I have more questions on the back of it.

We have Sky in two different rooms. If we cancel our Sky account do any of the channels stay? So free ones like channel 4 etc. Can we record these on our Sky+ HD box? Will we lose all of our already skyplussed programmes? and what will happen to our second room? We own all of the equipment so if we can use them like a freesat box that would be great (my brother did this in the UK years ago but I don't know if Sky have updated something to stop this working).

A previous poster said "if you have the Sky card you can give this a go" - were you referring to a card from the UK?

Failing all that, if we buy something like the Humax 1010a Freesat box PVR that FIRE suggested, we can just plug it into the existing cabling from the Sky boxes...but will our second room sky box work with this (I'm thinking not).

Once you cancel your subscription, you can't record, & viewing recordings seems to require a bit of preparation before cancellation, see this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057278497

Free channels are still viewable, but with an Irish card in the box, Channel 4, E4 etc. will now need to be tuned in via 'other channels'. With newer boxes, there's no point trying any of the 'tricks' (remove card, upside down card) to get the UK EPG: you need to replace the Irish card with a UK card.

once you sky box is not a hd box, just switch off, unplug, remove sub card plug in and power up again. the older box work like free to air receiver, no record function but 7 day epg, just put free channels in favorites and use blue button. no need for card unless its a hd box, then you can get a freesat card for about 5 euro.
