Are Ulster Bank uniquely incompetent?

    Hi,

I have corporate online banking with Ulster Bank - called Bankline. This service allows me to set up and make payments nationally and internationally to any receipient for any amount providing there are funds in the account.

Standing orders however seem to beyond the capability of Ulster Banks online service. If you want to set up a small standing order e.g. €100 a month you have to write a letter to them or visit a branch in person and complete some paperwork.

Can this actually be true in 2014? Is this simply an incompetency on behalf of Ulster Bank or is there a regulatory reason why standing orders have to be set up by letter/in person at a branch? Do other banks online services allow the user to set up Standing Orders?

No Ulster Bank are not unique in their idiosyncrasies
Many banks still require to send a letter by post to confirm their "instant" services.
It takes 2 mins to set up a new payment online but then they have to post out confirmation

Bank Of Ireland are the masters of this and making on line business banking for SMEs a nightmare. We started using AIB online for one of our accounts and so far its been a breeze to use. I think in time on line business banking is going to be a critical part of choosing who you bank with and the banks dont realise it yet

BOI now require full IBAN details to set up a standing order

They all do, but at least AIB (not sure about others) give you a SortCode/Account Number to IBAN converter, so you just put in the old fashioned Bank account details and it figures out the IBAN for you.

BofI have recently announced they're doubling business cheque/lodgement charges to encourage their business customers to move to on-line/electronic banking. Yet they fail to upgrade their website. Arrogance beyond belief!
