VAT on importing goods from Belgium

Have the rules for VAT on imports changed for Belgium?

A supplier wants to charge me VAT, although I am a registered trader in Ireland and he is a registered trader in Belgium.

    I am importing kitchen tops.

I always understood that he should not charge me VAT as we are both registered and it is a business-to-business supply?

You need to give him your Irish VAT number.

Yeah done that he says his accountants says he should charge me VAT. It doesn't make sense to me.

His accountant is wrong. If you have an Irish VAT No., he should supply, if he chooses.Mind you, there are moves afoot to change the system to what that accountant is saying, i.e. that you are charged VAT by the European supplier and claim it back from the Irish Vatman.

Thanks for that. So the system has not changed yet? anyway maybe his accountant doesn't know what he is talking about. I'm not paying VAT on import until I hear otherwise, I'll get someone else to supply me if he continues this nonsense.

Who was responsible for the delivery of the goods and when and if it was the supplier, where did you receive the goods?

if they insist on charging you Belgian VAT you may be able to reclaim this via EVR.

He is responsible for delivering the goods to me - he arranges the courier, customs etc. I just have to pay him. We have imported from Denmark before without VAT. In fact we have never had this problem before that I can remember. We have not used this supplier before so maybe that is why there is some hassle?

All sounds very strange and points to the fact that this supplier has no experience in exporting products to other EU member states.

Especially since they would organise the delivery, they can obtain the proof of delivery from their own carrier / courier. Together with the details of your VAT registration there should be absolutely no problem in applying a zero rate of VAT.

We always thought the Belgians were a funny lot ........
